Harriet’s Hub Opens to Help JC Students

(November 28, 2023 3:34 PM ET) Jackson College picked a perfect day to open Harriet’s Hub in William Atkinson Hall on the main JC campus. Today is known as Giving Tuesday as It takes place on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. The day was created to help the “giving season” get started, reminding people that there is more to holidays than consumerism, and commercialization. The college opened Harriet’s Hub for two hours taking donations for students , informing those at JC about the help available for students, and how others can hope.  Statistics point out that students need help too.  The United Way of Michigan says more than 1.5 million or 39 percent of households in Michigan are below the Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed threshold of financial survival. Harriet’s Legacy Harriet Myer was a professor at JC who cared deeply…

At a Special Meeting of the Jackson College Board of Trustees last week, Thomas was selected unanimously by a vote of the Trustees.  She will complete the term vacated by Sam Barnes who moved to take another job out of state, through December 2024. With nearly 20 years of professional experience at Henry Ford Jackson Hospital, Thomas offers a wealth of experience connecting with the community. As Director of Community Engagement, she is the point person for building relationships with stakeholders and contributing to the health system’s positive reputation. The first – and key step – involves talking and listening to the people most involved. She hopes to help do the same with Jackson College. “A key point of interest for me is making sure that students who typically don’t see an option to go to college are provided that opportunity, helping the community at large in terms of getting an education,” Thomas said. “It’s important that we’re getting the word out to students and helping them navigate that journey.” Listening to students and…
