Jackson College Announces Fun for Seniors with Clay Workshop and Pickleball Class

(March 29, 2023 3:06 PM ET) Jackson College announces a series of upcoming events for seniors to get creative and get active. A Clay Workshop for Seniors is planned for April 13 & 27, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the STEAM Factory on Central Campus. This free ceramics class will be taught by Jackson College ceramics instructor Mark Dehetre. Participants will get an introduction to clay and make a project April 13, then come back to add color or finish their project on April 27. Lunch will be provided. This workshop is provided at no cost for those aged 65 and older.  Please register by April 7 by contacting Affinity Liaison for the Elderly, Katie Crowley, at 517.796.8481 (press 1) or CrowleyKathleeE@jccmi.edu.  Learn more about a fun sport gaining popularity at a Pickleball Class for Seniors on Saturday, April 15 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon in the Victor Cuiss Fieldhouse on Central Campus. A free demonstration and skill class will be taught by volunteers from the Jackson Pickleball Association. Jackson College joins Detroit Regional Talent Compact

(March 28, 2023 9:13 AM ET) Jackson College signed the Detroit Regional Talent Compact, an equity-driven initiative led by the Detroit Regional Chamber’s Detroit Drives Degrees program. The Compact brings together stakeholders from business, philanthropy, government, K-12, and higher education to accomplish two goals: increase the Detroit region’s postsecondary attainment rate to 60 percent and reduce the racial equity gap by half by 2030. “We are proud to be a part of this comprehensive initiative of a broader southeast Michigan effort to help more students succeed in higher education, whether through the completion of a degree, a workplace credential, or transferring to a baccalaureate institution,” said Jackson College President Daniel J. Phelan. “We join many of our peer community colleges in the state in sharing ideas and experiences that lead to better student outcomes. I am grateful to the Detroit Regional Talent Compact for selecting Jackson College to engage in this very important work.” Launched in October 2020, statewide and regional partners announced their chosen strategies and commitments to the compact and the dual goals of education attainment and racial equity.
