Jackson High boys will have to win with pressure and defense this winter By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson – Unless there’s some unforeseen, or magical, growth spurts from now until next week, Dan Crowley is going to have one of his smallest, in height that is, teams ever. And the Jackson High boys basketball coach is just fine with. What other choice does he really have? “We’re going to have to be a team that runs baseline to baseline,” Crowley said simply. “We’re going to press. We’re going to mix up the defense and put a lot of pressure on the ball.” Keegan Davis, who transferred back to Jackson this school year from Florida after leaving two years ago, is the team’s tallest player at 6 feet, 3 inches. Along with a lack of size, Crowley said his guys are still battling some injuries, as well. Shonte Suddeth hadn’t had a full practice as of Nov. 28, and skipped the team’s scrimmage. Rarshiem Owens injured his knee and was still being evaluated. The Vikings do have plenty of talent, though. When Suddeth and Owens are healthy, they’ll be…
Munz ready to see Jackson High girls basketball take big step forward By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson – This was a youthful team, and by youthful, we’re talking hardly any varsity experience. It was also a team without a coach until shortly before the 2014-15 season officially started. By the end of the winter campaign, the Jackson High girls basketball team had taken some needed strides in the right direction, but still closed up shop with a 6-16 overall record. Now in his second season, coach Elliot Munz expects things to be different, and by different, we’re talking better. “We have some pieces in place to be much better,” Munz said. “The girls have one more year of varsity experience under their belt. Remember, we only had three seniors last year, most girls were new to varsity basketball, and I was in my first year, starting very late with the team. A lot is different now.” Munz said it started with a productive offseason, and although early, signs have been good so far as to that paying off. “They are playing very confidently,” he said. “We have some great senior leadership…

JTV Sports Player of the Year Suddeth anchored Jackson High to eight wins and playoff appearance with dominant running By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson – His summer routine was one dedicated to basketball. And spending most of that time in the Detroit area playing with his AAU team, Shonte Suddeth admitted there was little time to focus or work on football before training camp started. “For a few years, I had people telling me, ‘this was going to be the year,’” he said of the football team. “So this summer, I decided to do whatever I could to make sure that happened. I decided I was going to focus on only football.” So he stayed in the area, putting his basketball homework on hold. “I went to all the 7-on-7’s. I did the boot camps, the workouts,” Suddeth added. “I took it a little more serious this season. I knew what I was playing for.” The payoff is impossible to miss, as Suddeth was the go-to guy on Jackson team that had its best season in years, and the junior running back was named 2015 JTV Sports Player of the Year. “He’s just a great kid and a fanatic…
JTV Sports Coach of the Year After seven wins in five years, Farley took Jackson to district final on the gridiron By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson – This certainly wasn’t the best of situations to walk into. A program teetering on the edge of becoming irrelevant, and maybe worse, an expectation that it couldn’t change. After making the postseason in 2009, the Jackson High football program went a staggering 1-17 the next two seasons. Enter Scott Farley. Commence the turnaround. “We knew from the beginning this would all be part of a process,” Farley said earlier this week of his approach when he took over at Jackson prior to the 2013 season. “You saw all the things that were building, the things I thought we were capable of. We had some adversity, but we were able to grow from it.” It would take time, and Farley knew patience would have to accompany his teaching. In 2013, the Vikings went 2-7. In 2014, just 1-8. “When you have kids that buy into the vision, it makes a big difference,” Farley added. The Vikings bought in, and their patience paid off this fall with an 8-3 record, a trip to the…

After years of struggling, Jackson reestablished football tradition in 2015 By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson – There came a time when something had to change, a moment where this trend of suffering and forgettable moments, had to be dismissed. Since reaching the playoffs in 2009, the Jackson High football program had been coasting downhill, like, Clark Griswold on a greased up sled speeding downhill. A year after making the playoffs the Vikings went 3-6. That was followed by 1-8, 0-9, 2-7 and 1-8. And then, at last, came 2015. “Truthfully, I expected a very good year,” coach Scott Farley said earlier this week while reflecting on the season. “We knew we had good guys coming back. We had some character guys, guys that put a lot of work into making this better.” And did they ever. Following last weekend’s loss to Livonia Franklin in the district final, the Vikings closed the fall with an 8-3 record. Again, that’s after going 7-38 in the five previous seasons. “As far as building the program back up, it was important to have a year like this,” Farley stressed. “The kids needed to see that if they did what we asked, we could…
