Focused on Holt

Playoffs can be clinched, but Farley and Vikings have just one thing in mind By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson – It’s been a long, long time — too long in fact. And that’s certainly not lost on Scott Farley as the Jackson High football coach preps his team for Friday night’s tilt with Holt High. Win, and they’re in. Win, and a streak of missing the playoffs that dates back to 2009 comes to a crashing halt. Yet, as Farley talked about the one-win-from-the-playoffs landscape the Vikings currently reside in, he said the focus isn’t on what could be in Week 10, but instead, what has to be right now. “We’re not focused on playoffs, we’re focused on finding a way to beat Holt,” the Vikings sideline general said simply. And truthfully, that’s plenty enough to think about. A perennial power the better part of 13 years, Holt stumbled in 2014, going 3-6 and missing the playoffs for just the fourth time since 2000. Pink Viking Project

Jackson High Football held its second annual Pink Viking Project at the Jackson vs Lansing Eastern game on October 9.  Athletes wore jerseys bearing the names of cancer patients, survivors and victims.  Before the game, players and family members walked the track to honor those who have died.  The athletes were introduced along with family members of persons honored.  The event was held as a fundraiser and to increase awareness in the battle against cancer.  Last year, more than $8,000 was raised and donated to Allegiance Health Foundation Patient Assistance Fund.

Vikings keep attention front and center heading into battle with winless Okemos    By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson – The tendency may not be acceptable, but human nature has a way of pushing through from time to time.   A team on the upswing facing one that has yet to win.   A result all but guaranteed.   That’s the exact mindset Scott Farley is looking to avoid as his Jackson High football team makes Friday night’s trip to Okemos.   “We’re going to focus on ourselves,” the Vikings’ coach said earlier this week. “Truthfully, we’re not good enough to worry about what any other team is going through. We’re focused on our level of improvement.”   In other words, human tendencies be damned.   After bursting out of the gates with back-to-back wins to start the season — and surpass 2014’s win total — the Vikings fell 28-21 to East Lansing, beat Lansing Sexton 35-34, and then dropped a 35-16 battle with Grand Ledge last weekend.   The team’s 3-2 record equals the number of wins the program had from 2012-2014, and traveling to take on a winless Okemos team presents a glorious opportunity to pull a…
