Titans Survive…Barely

Lumen watches 21-point lead slip away, hangs on to beat Northwest for first victory  By Mike Moore Staff Writer  Jackson – A 21-point lead had evaporated into thin air. And now, with less than two seconds remaining in regulation, Lumen Christi boys basketball coach Pat Neville stood helplessly on the sideline watching a potential game-clinching shot sail through the air. He stood, he watched, and after the final buzzer mercifully sounded, he forced a smile. “Its always a nice thing to get a win,” Neville said following Friday night’s 58-56 home victory against Northwest. The Titans led 39-18 at halftime. “The thing is, you want to build on these. I think sometimes you come into a gym and you have a win, but people may think the way we played in the second half, it’s a loss. But the in the final line, a win is a win.” Barely, but true. Despite dominating the first 16 minutes of the game and leading by 21 at the halftime break, the Titans were plagued by sloppy play, turnovers, foul trouble, a pair of technicals and a Northwest team making a ferocious comeback. Lumen was bailed out by a Lloyd Foust put back…

Experience needed

Brown says Northwest basketball team will get better with time   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson – In each of the first two games of the season Justin Brown got glimpses of what his team could be, and what it is right now.   Talented and inexperienced.   Two traits that often go hand in hand, which can be good and bad.   “There are going to be nights we play very well,” Brown, the Northwest boys hoops coach, said. “And on other nights, the inexperience is going to show. We have a lot of guys playing together for the first time, and that’s a very big adjustment.”   The Mounties found their stride in the second half of last season, closing the regular portion of the schedule with eight-consecutive wins before falling in the playoff opener to end with a 13-8 record.   But the playoff game was the final four eight seniors.   The 2015-16 squad has just three varsity veterans, features seven players that were on the JV a year ago, and two transfers.   As for the afore mentioned glimpses Brown got in the first two games, well, Northwest led Harper Creek in the…

Bigger goals ahead

After reaching quarterfinals, Jackson United hockey takes aim at next step   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson – The record book was rewritten, from goals scored to wins accumulated to a final playoff destination reached.   And all that occurred in one year for the Jackson United hockey team last winter.   So, a year later, with many of the same characters back in the mix, well, it’s time for more.   At least that’s the attitude Andy Sinkovitz and his guys are hitting the ice with.   “The goal is to do what we did last year, but go a step further,” Sinkovitz said. “We’re going to face better competition. We’re going to be tested. But that’s what I think this team is capable of.”   The Vikings’ success in 2014-15 paved the way for a whole new round of interest, as 32 players tried out for the squad.   “And we had a lot of higher-skilled players come out, guys that played travel hockey last year,” Sinkovitz said. “We’ve been able to replace a lot of what we lost, which was awesome.”   Jackson rolled to a 22-5-1 record last winter, the best in program history…

Lofty goals

Northwest girls look to build on last season’s 19-5 final record   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson – If last year was good, well, this season could be one to remember.   When the Northwest girls basketball team takes the floor for the first time next Tuesday at Grass Lake, the squad will be doing so with an impressive resume to fall back on, and some very lofty goals to live up to.   “Our approach every year is to compete for championships, whether that’s in the conference or the district and beyond,” coach Ryan Carroll said simply. “With that said, I think we’ve set the bar pretty high and we’re taking a head-on approach to that goal all season.”   The Mounties went 19-5 last winter, reaching the regional round for the second time in three years. Their 10-2 mark in the Interstate 8 Conference was second only to undefeated (12-0) Marshall High.   But the lofty goals — winning the conference, district and beyond — aren’t simply based on what was done last winter, but who did it.   Almost an entire group that’s back in the mix.   We brought back seven girls from last year’s…
