One Win Away

Western football team rolls past Northwest, can clinch playoff spot against Dexter  By Mike Moore JTV Sports Writer  Jackson - One win away. A program that’s suffered through a postseason drought since its inception, the Western football team is now that close to breathing the rare air of the playoffs. One win away. “We knew Northwest would give us their best effort, and they played us very tough,” Western coach Dave Mifsud said after his guys beat the Mounties 45-20 Friday night to improve to 5-3 on the season. “Give them a lot of credit, they probably played the best they have in the past three or four games. Our focus was to get past this one. We got the win. We’re one step closer to our goal.” Northwest played like a team with nothing to lose, and started the game with a bang, recovering an onside kick. But shortly after, Steele Fortress picked off a Ryan Crowley pass and Western took over at its own 37-yard line. The Panthers then matched 63 yards in nearly eight minutes before Fortress hit Austen Cooper with a 29-yard touchdown pass on fourth down. Shortly after a Northwest punt, the Panthers went up…

Ready to rumble

Western can take giant step toward playoffs, but has to get past tough rival first  By Mike Moore Staff Writer  Parma – It happened in his very first season, the very first time he coached against Northwest. Western football coach Dave Mifsud had heard about the rivalry the two schools shared, “but in that game I learned what it was all about,” he said. “It’s two schools of similar size. The area around Northwest and the area around Western, it’s kind of similar,” he added. “Yet there seems to be that feeling of dislike from both ends. I picked up on that right away.” The year was 2013, and en route to a 5-4 season, Northwest blew past Western 40-13 in Week 8, “and they didn’t call the dogs off,” Mifsud said with a laugh. There’s no laughing matter some two years later, though, as the Panthers are two wins away from the program’s first ever playoff berth, with two games to play. And Week 8 is a short trip up to Northwest. “And we expect them to bring everything they’ve got against us,” Mifsud said of the Friday night tilt in Mountie territory. Coming off a 12-7 loss to…

Enough to Get it Done

Brogan says there’s work to do, but Lumen rolls to 41-6 victory over Northwest  By Mike Moore Staff Writer  Jackson – With one knee to the ground, Liam Daly let the final few seconds of the first half tick away. And with that, Lumen Christi technically didn’t score on every possession. Technically. The other four times with the ball all ended in the end zone, and that’s the kind of day it was for the Titans’ offense, which rolled to a 41-6 victory at home against Northwest Saturday afternoon. “We’re really blocking well up front,” coach Herb Brogan said. “The strength of our team is the offensive line. We have a couple backs who are explosive, but I thought we blocked really well.” Lumen got the ball first, and made the most of the opening drive, covering 55 yards to take a 7-0 lead when Josh Marsh scored on a 36-yard run. Northwest showed its ability to move the ball as well, getting all the way to the Lumen 18 yard line before failing to convert on fourth down. The Titans made them pay, going 82 yards in nearly three minutes. Daly capped the drive with an 11-yard touchdown run…

Northwest Falls to Eaton Rapids 24-21 in Opener

By Mike Moore Staff Writer  Jackson – Everything but win. That's how it felt Friday night for the Northwest football team in the 2015 season opener. A lead at halftime led to a lead in the fourth quarter, which eventually led to heartbreak. “It’s tough because we fought so hard,” Northwest coach Corey Slater said following a 24-21 loss to Eaton Rapids at home. “That’s one thing I liked about the kids, though, is we fought. It was an exciting high school football game.” As was the case so many times last year during their 1-8 season, the Mounties were more than in the game all night, despite a rough start. Eaton Rapids got on the board right away, taking advantage of a pair of 15-yard Northwest penalties, both on failed third-down conversions, to eventually get a 5-yard scoring run from Tyler Oberlin-Scott. The extra-point attempt was blocked and the Greyhounds led 6-0. “We had them stopped twice,” Slater said. “Those penalties really hurt us.” The teams traded punts in the next two possessions, but when Northwest began its second drive of the half, it did so from its own 48-yard line. Sophomore quarterback Ryan Crowley got himself involved with the passing…

Northwest football looks to regroup as 2015 season is set to roll

A clean slate Northwest football looks to regroup as 2015 season is set to roll  By Mike Moore Staff Writer  Jackson – After a pair of 1-8 seasons under a new coach, there was a feeling things were going to change. After a 3-24 record from 2010 through 2012, there was the sense that the Northwest football program was ready to turn the corner. And then, in 2013, the guys nearly did. The 5-4 record not only eclipsed the total win total from those three years, but made the Mounties playoff eligible for the first time since 2008 and just the third time since the automatic qualified was established some 14 years prior. In the end, there was heartbreak that the selection committee looked past Northwest, but there was momentum building, expectations soaring. And then, 2014 presented another 1-8 finish. “That was tough,” coach Corey Slater said simply earlier this week. He’s now in his fourth year with the program. “We kind of thought we had things fixed (after 2013). But I think we took some things for granted, with leadership and coming off a 5-4 season and all that. Joining the new conference was tough as well. Every week…
