Local Student Named Finalist in National Cyber Scholarship Foundation Competition

(June 3, 2022 4:08 PM) Karson Durocher, a senior from Western High School and Jackson Area Career Center Networking & Cybersecurity student, has been named a Finalist by the National Cyber Scholarship Foundation (NCSF) for his performance in a challenging online cybersecurity training program. In recognition of his achievement, Durocher earned an invitation to participate in the Cyber Foundations Academy – a multi-week online program based on the nationally-recognized SANS Foundations training course and certification – valued at more than $3,000. In April, twenty students from the Career Center’s Networking & Cybersecurity program participated in CyberStart America, an immersive cybersecurity training game for high school students that has more than 200 fun-to-play challenges that require them to solve real-world cybersecurity problems. Students who scored highly in the CyberStart America training program were invited to apply for a scholarship award offered by the National Cyber Scholarship Foundation (NCSF). More than 45,000 students across the nation competed, with 4,127 having the 20,000 needed points to make it to NCS Semifinalist status. In Michigan, 760 students competed, and 64 made it to the NCS…

State Track, Field Qualifiers for Jackson County Teams

(June 3, 2022 8:16 AM) Jackson County will be well represented at the Michigan High School Athletic Association state finals on Saturday. Western’s girls’ team and Concord’s boys’ team should be near the top in their respective team competitions. Last year Grass Lake won both of the Division 3 titles.  The top two finishers plus athletes who had state-qualifying times, heights, or distances at regional events two weeks ago qualified for the state meet on Saturday. The top eight in each event earn medals and all-state honors at the state finals.  Stay tuned to JTV.TV for results later on Saturday night. Here are the student-athletes hoping to be on the podium Saturday afternoon from Jackson County.  Division 2 boys: Jacob Singleton of Western High School won the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:04 at the D-2 regional two weeks ago to qualify for the state meet. Lincoln Raczkowski of Western finished second in the 300-meter hurdles to qualify for the state meet with a time of 40.68 seconds. Softball Northwest 9, Waverly 2: Katelyn Kennedy hit a home run and knocked in two runs for the Mounties in the home win. Campbell Kloack had three hits and Cora Pilaczynski knocked in four runs for Northwest. Neaveh Ingram struck out 12 batters and scattered three hits in the contest for Northwest (35-2).  Northwest 11, Waverly 1: Maddy Rowley finished with three hits and knocked in three runs for the Mounties in the win. Isabell Rogers hit a home run and knocked in a pair of runs. Baseball Onsted 14, Columbia Central 4: Tyler Ladd had two hits for the Golden Eagles in the loss.  Softball Harper Creek 21, Lumen Christi 8: Allison O’Dowd had two hits and knocked in two runs and Kadence Hinkley recorded two hits for the Titans.  Harper Creek 21, Lumen Christi 3: The Titans had five hits in the contest, including two hits from Allison O’Dowd.  Northwest 18, Pennfield 0: Grace Pilaczynski had three hits and knocked in three runs for the Mounties. Nevaeh Ingram was perfect on the mound striking out all nine batters she faced in the three-inning no-hitter.  Northwest 14, Pennfield 1: Northwest scored 10 runs in the first inning of the Interstate-8 Conference contest. Isabell Rogers hit a home run and finished with three RBIs. Cora Pilaczynski finished with three hits and four RBIs for Northwest (33-2).  Girls soccer districts Division 2 at Charlotte – Western 2, Northwest 1, OT: Amelia Walicki scored the game-winning-goal on a header with 2:48 left in overtime for the Panthers.
