Season Ends for Lumen Christi

By Larry JacobsonJTV Sports Only four teams win their last game at the end of the boy’s high school basketball season. In all of Michigan, only four teams finish the year hoisting a trophy, smiling and celebrating. Only four - state champions in Classes A, B, C and D - out of well over 600. The rest of those teams – no matter how special their season, how amazing their run or how beloved they are to friends, family and the community – walk off the court having lost their final game of the year. On Tuesday night, in the Class B state quarterfinals at Chelsea High School, it was Lumen Christi’s turn to take that bitter, painful walk. The Titans magnificent season came to an end in a 50-47 loss to Detroit Community High School. The Hurricanes (17-9) move on to the state semifinals at the Breslin Center next weekend. The Titans (21-4) saw their spirited quest for basketball glory fall three games short. “We gave it everything we had,” senior guard Amani Bass said outside the Titan locker room after the game. “It came right down to the end and we just couldn’t execute. We couldn’t get it…

Victory for Titans a Tall Order

By Larry JacobsonJTV SportsAfter the Lumen Christi boys basketball team knocked off Columbia Central to win a district championship, Titan coach Rich Karasek reflected on his squad. “These guys have been playing together for a long time,” Karasek said after that 69-61 win. “This is a very, very special basketball team and I think people are starting to realize that.” Special indeed… The Titans hosted this year’s Class B regional matchups and Monday night they easily dispatched an outmanned Olivet team 75-28. But Wednesday night was a different story. Wednesday night Lumen Christi looked across the gym at one of the premier powers in the state, regardless of class. Standing in the Titans path of a first regional championship in over 20 years was a Big Red squad whose physical stature matched their nickname. Sexton’s front line looked like something you might find at the college level. They featured 6’10 sophomore Trevor Manuel (one of the most highly recruited talents in the Midwest); silky smooth 6’7 senior Jalen Hayes, who has committed to play for Oakland University next year, and 6’5 junior Austin Johnson. The two-time defending Class B state champions also featured 6’2 senior, and former Jackson Viking, Jeremy…

Hot Streaks Collide in Title Game

By Larry JacobsonJTV Sports         Columbia Central came into Friday night’s Class B District Championship game at Napoleon High School on a hot streak.  The Eagles flew into Friday’s title game having won nine in a row – not losing since a thumping at Hillsdale in late January. Lumen Christi, however, entered the game having been on a hot streak… well… all season. In the end, the season-long hot streak won out. The Titans claimed the district title with a 69-61 win over CC in front of a loud, packed house at Napoleon. Lumen Christi was in control from the outset, leading 25-16 after one quarter and 41-28 at the half by controlling the tempo of the game. They pushed the ball up court on offense and pressed on defense, forcing the Eagles to adjust on the fly. Columbia Central came into the game with an advantage down low, featuring 6’7 senior center Riley Boyers and 6’6 forward Tucker Kik. Lumen Christi, however, negated any advantage by getting their wing players out in space. “We definitely wanted to control the tempo of the game,” Titan junior forward Matt Bullinger said. “We wanted to make them play our style…

Vikings Hire Farley as New Coach

By Larry JacobsonJTV SportsBlackhawk down… … US-127 from Leslie to Jackson High School, that is. It became official on March 4 when longtime Leslie High School football coach Scott Farley announced he was leaving the Blackhawk program and taking over at Jackson. “This was a very, very difficult decision to make,” Farley said. “The people in and around the Leslie program and community have been very supportive and we’ve built something special here. I had to take some time before making a decision, but I look forward to this challenge.” And quite a challenge it will be… The difference in the programs is immense. Farley compiled a 117-82 record at Leslie - including an 84-42 mark since 2001 – three conference championships and trips to the state semi-finals in 2007 and 2008.    The ‘Hawks have featured one of the area’s most high-powered offenses in recent years and have waged several epic battles with perennial area power Grass Lake. The Vikings, on the other hand and although playing on a larger stage, have struggled, going winless last year and 4-23 the last three years. Jackson has lost 16 consecutive games and hasn’t posted a win since a 35-34 victory over…
