New Benchmark Set at Selby Classic

By Larry JacobsonJTV SportsTo write an article about Jackson High Senior Cierra Pryor – the athlete – doesn’t do her justice and, frankly, it’s not much of a challenge. Google her name and the list of athletic accomplishments is amazing. Watch her run around the track at the James R. Selby Track & Field Classic, where she is now an unprecedented four-time winner of the Outstanding Female Performer Award and it’s breathtaking. She is that fluid, that smooth, that impressive… Cierra doesn’t enter track meets – she dominates them. And when faced with an obstacle (or a hurdle to use a track term) she clears it. Cierra’s right foot is her ‘jump foot,’ meaning when she runs the long jump (in which she holds the state record) she goes airborne off that right foot. During the basketball season this winter she severely sprained the ligaments in her right ankle, making it difficult to get that dynamic lift. Undaunted, Cierra simply started jumping off her left foot. It’s a change that the untrained eye would never notice, but to an athlete it’s significant. To Cierra, it was simply an obstacle that needed to be overcome. ‘Bad right foot? Use the left…

East Jackson’s Aaron Griffiths named JTV Sports Player of the Year in Boys Basketball

By Larry JacobsonJTV SportsWhen Aaron Griffiths was in the fifth grade, he had the magical ability to stop time. In the driveway of his home he imagined he was an East Jackson Trojan locked in a tight Snowfest battle with the Napoleon Pirates. His friends and teammates, his family and perhaps the entire civilized world depended on him to hit the big shot at the end of the game to win it for EJ. So the countdown would begin from five seconds down to four and then three and he’d put up that game winning shot and… … well, if it didn’t go in he’d just rewind time and do it again. Or maybe there was an imaginary foul resulting in a pair of free throws to win the game. And if he missed one of those free throws, there’d be a lane violation resulting in another chance… and another… and another… But that enchanting ability to stop time had long since passed when Griffiths, JTV Sports 2013 Boys Basketball Player of the Year, watched the final seconds tick away in EJ’s Class C District Championship game – and thus season ending – loss to Hanover-Horton in early March. “It…

Grass Lake’s Sydney Cook named JTV Sports Player of the Year in Girls Basketball

By Larry JacobsonJTV Sports  When she was a little girl, Grass Lake senior Sydney Cook used to play basketball with her dad in the driveway and allow him to set the stage for her. “Okay Syd,” he’d say. “There’s no time left on the clock in the NCAA championship game, but you’ve been fouled. If you make one free throw, we’re going to overtime. If you make them both, we win the whole thing. If you miss them, then we lose.” Does this sound familiar? In how many driveways, backyards, playgrounds or school yards does this scenario play out? Sometimes Sydney, JTV Sports 2013 Girls Basketball Player of the Year, would nail the free throws – sometimes she would miss them. But when she missed, her dad (who coached her competitively on travels teams while she was growing up) would throws his hands up and say ‘awww, too bad – we lose.’ When she asked for another shot – perhaps a lane violation – he’d simply shake his head: “There are no do-over’s Sydney.” In life as in basketball, there are no do-over’s. And Sydney Cook attacked her Grass Lake High School basketball career with that notion in mind. Cook…
