By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (November 7, 2020 7:11 PM) Ten high school cross country runners finished in the top 30 in their respective races at the Michigan High School Athletic Association cross country finals at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday. The top 30 in each division earn all-state honors. COVID-19 restrictions split the divisions into two races – one with teams who finished first or second in their respective regional races and another for the third-place teams at regionals and individual qualifiers. The MHSAA was trying to limit the number of athletes in each race. Fans were also restricted to the grandstands, items like tents (where people would congregate) were banned, and teams had a checkout and check-in times. Here is a listing off all of the Jackson Country runners who participated in the two-day event. D-1 Tyler Lowery of Jackson High School shook off a COVID-19 scare on Monday and placed 135th in the Division 1 race on Friday. He finished the 5K course in…

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (October 31, 2020 6:04 PM)  Vandercook Lake High School combined homecoming, senior night, band night, and possibly the last – and only – home football game of the season on Saturday. The Jayhawks competed in what was billed the Big 8-Man high school “playoff” game against Vermontville Maple Valley at home. Maple Valley used a strong running game to get past the Jayhawks, 22-6. According to a Michigan High School Athletic Association press release last week, four schools with enrollments too large to qualify for the 8-player postseason – Bridgman, Vandercook Lake, Vermontville Maple Valley and Concord – will play a two-round playoff to conclude their seasons. That playoff is not sponsored by the MHSAA, but allowed because of the shortened schedule. The MHSAA caps enrollment for 8-man football to 215 students in high school football. Maple Valley improved to 4-3, while Vandercook is 4-2. Bridgman (6-1) defeated Concord 43-21 on Friday night. The Yellow Jackets are 1-7 on the season – playing part of the season…

Three Teams Tie for First in Cascades Girls’ XC Final

Grass Lake High School runner Kailee Sandoval won her second consecutive Cascades Conference cross country individual title by winning the meet on Monday at Ella Sharp Park.  Photo by Jeff Steers, JTV Sports. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports COVID-19 nearly claimed another victim during the Cascades Conference cross country finals at Ella Sharp Park on Monday. But just about everyone went home happy due to the results. Hanover-Horton, Manchester and Grass Lake were named tri-champs at the conference meet after the teams reversed the regular season dual results. Grass Lake finished undefeated in dual meets, Manchester lost to the Warriors, and Hanover-Horton finished third in the dual season after losing two dual meets for the first time in 23 years. Monday morning Grass Lake had a positive COVID-19 test, meaning three runners from the Warriors were told to quarantine – not allowed to run at the conference meet. Hanover-Horton won the conference final with 36 points on Monday, Manchester was second at 46, and Grass Lake finished third with 80 – a reversal of fortune for the dual meets. Longtime H-H Coach Dean Blackledge told his young team to keep preparing for an opportunity. “I feel bad for the Grass…
