Western Basketball Flexes Muscle Down the Stretch, Claims First Conference Title Since 1995

By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson — This was talked about in the offseason, the main goal the Western basketball team set forth. Ryan Mulnix and his guys spoke about it at length during the regular season, reaffirming their ambition to bring a conference title back to the program that had, for so long, gone without one. And then, in the days leading up to Friday night’s road trip to Northwest, Mulnix said he was tired of the talk, tired of the hope and mission. Friday night, the Panthers’ sideline general remained somewhat speechless. “I don’t know. I don’t even know if I can describe this right now,” Mulnix, struggling for words outside his team’s locker room, said following a 52-34 victory and co-conference championship. “It was a lot of hard work to do this. The coaching staff. The players, they are the ones that do everything.” Western entered the game needing a win to clinch at least a share of the I-8 title, an accomplishment the program hadn’t done since 1995. The nerves, the tension, the pressure, whatever it was, took its toll early on. Western struggled to get much of anything going, scoring just three points in the…

Mulnix and his Panthers understand what’s on the line Friday night at Northwest

By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Parma — In one way or another, they’ve been talking all year about this, about this goal, about this mission, about how long it’s been since the Western boys basketball team has won a conference title.   Well, with Friday’s tilt at Northwest fast approaching, Western coach Ryan Mulnix said simply, “I don’t think we need to talk about it any more.”   Those who have followed the Panthers understand what’s at stake, and the kind of drought that can be erased with 32 minutes of good basketball.   It was 1995 when the Panthers last won a conference title.   With a win in Friday’s 7:30 p.m. tip at Northwest, the worst Western can do is share the I-8 Conference championship.   “I think it’s sunk in, everything that’s on the line,” Mulnix said. “And that’s why I think we’ve talked about it enough. It’s time to go play the game.”   The Panthers had a chance to secure their spot in history Tuesday night, but were upended by Harper Creek 54-53.   “It was tough, it really was,” Mulnix said of the one-point loss. “At the end of the day, though, it…

Marshall looms, but Panthers must take care of Hastings first

By Mike Moore Staff Writer   The big one is Tuesday.   The focus is on Friday.   That’s the message Ryan Mulnix has for his Western boys basketball team as it preps for tonight’s home date with Hastings.   Yes, Hastings has won three games all year.   Yes, Western rolled in a 59-46 victory early this season.   And yes, Marshall looms Tuesday night in a pivotal conference game.   But no, looking past the here and now is not an option.   “We have no wiggle room,”Mulnix said late Thursday night. “We want to win every game we have from here on out.”   The Panthers are 11-3 overall and 6-2 in conference play.   They were tied for first place before falling to Coldwater 69-63 at home last Friday.   “It was a home game, and they were without their best player,” Mulnix said. “I think we let our guard down. That was a disappointing loss.   Now it’s time to rebound.   “We’re still talking about a league title, but really, we’re focused on what we can control,” Mulnix said. “We have to worry about what we can do, and that starts with Hastings.”  …

Young Western wrestling team approaching district with learn-first attitude

By Mike Moore Staff Writer  Photo Courtesy of Western High School Parma — Team district time has arrived in the state on Michigan in the sport of wrestling.   For Greg Hoffman and his Western squad, that means it’s time to dig in, and really learn.   The Panthers will kick off the 2017 postseason Wednesday night at Charlotte in the tournament, taking on Eaton Rapids at 6 p.m.   “We need to wrestle the best we have all season,” Hoffman said simply. “Eaton Rapids is a good team, ranked 10th right now. So, the plan is to have every kid go out and do the best they can. We’ll see what happens.”   The winner of the opening match takes on Northwest or Charlotte in the team final.   Yet, as he spoke about the district and the postseason in general, Hoffman was quick to caution getting too far ahead of himself.   He’s led the Panthers to a 20-8 record this year, and a third-place finish in the conference standings.   “Solid, but not great,” as he put it.   Understandable considering the overall youth Western’s roster is made of.   The team has just two seniors and…
