By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Grass Lake High School wrestler Trenton Holden said he was getting “gassed” at the end of his matches last season. The junior went out and did something about it. It paid off Saturday. Holden won the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 4 state wrestling title at 160 pounds at Ford Field on Saturday afternoon. He finished the season with a 46-1 record. The Grass Lake junior was one of three local wrestlers earning state individual titles Saturday in the MHSAA finals. Springport wrestler Thomas Potter won the Division 4 title at 152 pounds and Simon Lato of Manchester claimed the top spot at 285 pounds. Holden said following his win over Nick Phillips in the D-4 finals that he changed his regiment this season after getting knocked out of the playoffs in the regional round last year. “I don’t have a training partner, so I had four coaches work with me,” Holden said. “Each one worked with me in a rotation.” That…

MC Too Much for CC in Girls District Final

Michigan Center High School basketball players celebrate another district basketball title.  Photo by Jeff Steers, JTV Sports. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Michigan Center High School girls’ basketball player Shealyn Tripp said the Cardinals were not going to make the same mistake as last year. The Cardinals defeated Grass Lake in a tough district final in 2019, but lost in the opening round of the regional tournament at home. Tripp had a lot of do with the Cardinals’ 47-35 win over Columbia Central in this year’s Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 district final win. The junior scored 23 points and pulled down six rebounds as the Cardinals advanced to the regional round for another season. Michigan Center improves to 19-3 and rides a 16-game winning streak into the regional semifinals Tuesday at Columbia Central. Columbia Central finishes the season with a 20-3 record and another Lenawee County Athletic Association championship. The Golden Eagles breezed past East Jackson and Vandercook Lake to advance to this year’s district final. Michigan Center had to get past Grass Lake – again – to advance to the 2020 district final. “Last year we beat Grass Lake in the district final then lost to…

Western Earns I-8 Girls’ Basketball Title With Defensive Gem

Reece Hitt (33) of Western High School takes a shot over Maddie Alexander of Harper Creek during a home game on Friday.  Photo by Jeff Steers, JTV Sports. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports It was too long ago that winning 10 games in girls’ basketball was a huge goal for the Western High School varsity basketball team. Senior Natalie Shellberg remembers those days. She is enjoying the feeling of winning an Interstate-8 Conference basketball title and being 18-2 a little bit better. Shellberg and a host of players shut Battle Creek Harper Creek down in the second half to earn a 51-35 win. Both teams were 17-2 overall and 12-1 in the I-8 heading into the showdown at WHS on Friday night. “Our defense stepped up and our offense ran the floor well in the second half,” Shellberg said. “It was a great team effort and a big change for the program.” Shellberg was a freshman on a team that set a goal of winning one-third of its games three years ago. The Panthers moved up to having a winning record and finally winning its first conference title in 14 seasons this year. “Our program has come such a long…
