Western Earns Golf Invitational Win at Home

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (August 21, 2020 8:06 PM) The Western High School girls’ golf team used some local knowledge to win their own invitational on Friday. The Panthers used a solid back nine to win the Western Golf Invitational at Arbor Hills Golf Course. Western finished with a four-man team score of 380 for 18 holes to defeated East Jackson by nine strokes. The Panthers were 19 strokes better than the Trojans on the back nine on Friday. Western was led by Syd Redovich with a 78. She shot a 2-over-par 38 on the back nine earning medalist honors. Ayaka Matzen scored a 97, Amber Ladd shot 101, and Sadie Dietsch finished with a 104. East Jackson improved 33 strokes from the Hanover-Horton Invitational on Wednesday at Cascades Golf Course. Addy Rudd finished with a 93, Brynn Mericle shot a 97, Rory Mericle carded a 98, and Sammy Doerr finished with a 101. Lumen Christi Catholic High School finished third with a team score of 392…

MC Gets Off to Quick Start in Girls’ Golf

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (August 20, 2020 9:17 AM) The Michigan Center High School girls’ golf team stated its case for being one of the top programs in the Jackson area. And they made a strong statement. The Cardinals won the Hanover-Horton Golf Invitational at Cascades Golf Course on Wednesday. They beat the second-place team by nearly 40 strokes. Michigan Center bested the school record for 18 holes by a team with a score of 365. “The girls beat the (school) record from last year by 15 strokes,” Coach Cara Brown said. Despite being young a year ago, the Cardinals finished 15th in the state in Division 4. On Wednesday at Cascades, junior Kamryn Shannon earned medalist honors for MCHS with an 82. Three other golfers finished in the top 10 as Baylee Carlisle and Sydney Cramer tied for fifth place with 94s. Elly Trefry finished one stroke behind her teammates to take eighth place with a 95. Jackson Magazine Announces 2020 Top Teachers
(May 5, 2020 4:56 PM) Jackson Magazine has announced the winners of the 2020 Top Teacher Awards. The annual awards are usually presented at a banquet and ceremony on Teacher Appreciation Day, May 5. Jackson Magazine has had to postpone the tenth annual awards event to a date yet to be determined. Over 100 teacher nominations were received for this year's awards. To choose the Top Teachers, a committee of educators whittled the list to the Top 10. Those 10 teachers received two classroom visits from a second committee; a third group chose the final five. The Top Teachers of 2020 are: Teacher of the Year: Marnie Hade, Northwest High School Paul Bickel, Western High School Jessica Crandell, Northwest Elementary Amber Keathley, Northwest Early Elementary Sarah Runkel, Northwest Kidder Middle School These are the other Top Teachers making it to the Top 10: Amanda Aguilera, Columbia Elementary School Lisa Ebener, Northwest Elementary Melinda Spicer, Concord Community Schools Julie Evers, Northwest High School Matthew Snell, Northwest High School In addition to recognition in the May issue of Jackson Magazine, the Top Teachers also received a total of $9,000, thanks to a partnership that began in 2014 with the Jackson Community Foundation…
Wilcoxson Leaves Western with Nearly a Dozen School Records

But it is hard for the senior to comprehend what has happened in the last few months. “It still hasn’t sunk in yet,” Wilcoxson said of the COVID-19 pandemic canceling the spring sports season and classes. “Our athletic director told me on the last day of school (before it was postponed in March) that this ‘could be your last day in high school.’ “I wish I would have believed him and soaked it all in.” Wilcoxson is one of a number of seniors in the Jackson County area who have had his/her seasons and careers ended when schools were closed for the remainder of the year in April. A couple of days later, the Michigan High School Athletic Association followed suit and canceled the remainder of the winter tournaments and spring seasons. Western Sets School Record in Regional Basketball Win

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports On a night where Western High School’s two top scorers were held in check, a core of players led the Panthers to a solid defensive effort and a win. Western defeated Haslett High School 45-34 in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 girls’ basketball regional semifinal at Fowlerville High School. With the win the Panthers broke a school record for wins – 21 – with the old record dating back to 1988. Western will also face Marshall or Ida in the regional final on Thursday at FHS beginning at 7 p.m. Sophomore Reece Hitt stepped up to play the point guard role and lead the Panthers with 10 points. While Hitt is a starter, she normally camps at the 3-point line and waits for a shot.
