Construction on City’s First Traffic Circle to Begin Next Week

(City of Jackson photo) The City of Jackson has announced a massive two-phase road construction project will begin next week in the Austin Blair Park/Mt. Evergreen Cemetery neighborhood south of downtown. Construction crews will replace water mains, reconstruct intersections, resurface streets, and build a new traffic circle around Austin Blair Park. Work will first begin at the intersection of Greenwood Avenue and W. Morrell Street. Existing pavement will be removed so an aging water main under the intersection can be replaced. Once that work is complete, the intersection will receive new pavement, curbs and sidewalks, and improved traffic signals. This area will be closed to through traffic during construction, which is expected to last until mid-August. This is a major access point to the downtown area and drivers are advised to seek alternate routes and follow posted detours. Once work at that intersection is complete, crews will move north to replace water mains and resurface streets on Greenwood Avenue and S. Jackson Street up to W. Jackson YMCA Capital Campaign Receives Investment from American 1 Credit Union

At a ceremony this morning, American 1 Credit Union and the Jackson YMCA announced a new partnership agreement, which includes a $600,000 gift from American 1 to the Jackson YMCA’s Capital Campaign.  The gift, approved by the American 1 Board of Directors, is designated for the naming of the lobby of the new Jackson YMCA building. The YMCA’s Capital Campaign is a $25 million project to replace the current aging facility with a larger modern structure. The new facility will provide access for those with limited mobility, increase space for further development and growth, and will provide room for licensed child care among other needs. Speaking at the ceremony, American 1 CEO Martha Fuerstenau shared, “We believe that American 1 and the Jackson YMCA are well-aligned in our common purpose to welcome and serve all citizens as we seek to create a healthier community – be it physical health, social responsibility, or financial wellness. Our gift is designated for the lobby of the new Y, where children and adults of every race, faith, age, occupation, state of physical health and well-being will pass through as they engage in the all of the opportunities of the new facility.
