Purple Heart Recipient Named Honorary Starter of Pure Michigan 400

LANSING – U.S. Army veteran and Purple Heart recipient David Balestrino Jr. has been named honorary starter for the Pure Michigan 400 being held this Sunday, August 18, at Michigan International Speedway.  Balestrino was the winner of a fan contest on the Pure Michigan Facebook page, receiving the highest number of votes for his entry on why he wanted to wave the green flag on race day. Balestrino, of Youngstown, Ohio, served as a Combat Engineer in the U.S. Army from 2003-2009 and received a Purple Heart during his service in Iraq.  In his entry, Balestrino said he would like to drop the green flag in honor of his six year old son. “While serving in Iraq I missed the entire first year of Brady's life,” Balestrino said. “That was the most difficult thing I ever had to go through.  I still can't believe that I was picked for this awesome honor and I hope that I can make everyone who has served or is still serving proud.” As honorary starter, Balestrino will also have the opportunity to receive a pace car ride from NASCAR’s official pace car driver and attend the NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers’ meeting. “We received many…

The Inn on Jackson Square (The Sheraton)

Larry Jacobson, JTV Somewhere between 1976 and 1979 my older brother Freddie was spending his boogie nights at a place in Jackson he just called ‘The Sheraton.’ It was a time of Saturday Night Fever and Studio 54. I was around ten years old and my mom would take my younger brother and I shopping for school clothes, and on one occasion she bought a pair for Freddie. However, they had to be specific – she said ‘they had to be the kind that sort of flare out at the ankle.’ I didn’t understand the concept of ‘bell bottom jeans,’ but I knew Freddie was cool, therefore those jeans must be something special. He told me about going dancing at this place in downtown Jackson and he said once ‘it’s like another world in there.’ He told me stories about flashing strobe lights and a disco ball, about crazy dance parties and pretty girls and a mechanical bull. I only heard of the stories about the Sheraton – I never actually experienced them myself – but maybe by not being old enough to go in there I’ve allowed the legend to grow. Being on the outside and hearing my brothers’…

Researchers at Spring Arbor University and University of Michigan Health System to Collaborate on Biomedical Research

SAU faculty and students to conduct research with UM Brachial Plexus Program on disabling childhood disorder Spring Arbor and Ann Arbor, Mich. – Faculty and students at Spring Arbor University plan to collaborate with researchers and clinicians at the University of Michigan Brachial Plexus Program to conduct research to improve the lives of patients with a serious childhood disorder, Neonatal Brachial Plexus Palsy (NBPP). NBPP is a chronic, disabling condition that occurs during the perinatal period, resulting in paralysis and loss of sensation in the affected arm. The number of children impacted by this debilitating condition rivals cerebral palsy – one to four of every 1,000 children born in the United States. However, unlike cerebral palsy, NBPP is largely unknown. This anonymity results in a dearth of research as well as treatment options for children who are afflicted. “We believe the affiliation between Spring Arbor University and the University of Michigan Health System program would not only result in much-needed research to address this debilitating condition, but will also develop the ways and means to improve the quality of life of these patients through new solutions for the management of treatment for NBPP,” says Dr. Charles Webb, Spring Arbor University…
