(January 29, 2023 8:00 AM) Western High School junior Aiden Chappell said he is more of a “numbers guy” when it comes to subjects he likes in school.

He has been putting up solid numbers for Jackson United on the ice.

Chappell has been the points leader in Jackson for nearly two months of the high school hockey season.

He has 21 total points after putting up 27 points a year ago – 20 goals and seven assists.

The assists are up for Chappell and it appears as if he will surpass 27 points in 2022-2023.

But JU has been struggling to light the lamp on a consistent basis.

“It (the scoring) has been up and down, but we have not been scoring as much as we would like,” Chappell said. “We just have to keep putting in the work on the ice.”

Chappell is one of 14 players from Western listed on the JU roster – a co-op team with players from Jackson, Grass Lake, Northwest, Michigan Center, and Jackson Christian.

“I have played with pretty much all of them (the Western players) throughout the years,” Chappell said. “It takes a minute to get used to players from other schools, but we are all teammates and have to be able to play together.”

Chappell used to play football, but too many injuries spoiled some of his hockey seasons. He plays hockey exclusively all year long.

“I hit the weight room, skate as much as I can, participated in the split season and summer league in Chelsea,” Chappell said. “A few high schools come together once a week at Chelsea.”

Chappell would like to play college hockey if it becomes available. He shouldn’t have any trouble academically with a 3.8 grade point average at WHS.

“Playing college hockey is a goal right now,” Chappell said. “I have been playing hockey for 13 years and enjoy my teammates and just having fun.”
