(October 13, 2025 9:28 AM ET) The City of Jackson has announced the honorees for the 2025 Harold White Sr. Awards. Presented annually by the City’s Human Relations Commission, the awards recognize Jackson residents and organizations making a difference in promoting diversity, inclusion, and volunteerism in the community.
The honorees will be celebrated at the Harold White Sr. Awards Breakfast on Wednesday, October 22, at 7:30 a.m. at the MLK Recreation Center, 1107 Adrian Street, Jackson.
Diversity Award
Recognizes individuals or organizations that create a positive effect within a range of human differences, including race, ethnicity, gender, identity, ability, and beliefs.
- Officer Trent Marcum – A member of the Jackson Police Department, Officer Marcum is a longtime volunteer with Special Olympics Michigan, participating annually in the Polar Plunge and Law Enforcement Torch Run to raise funds for athletes’ equipment, training, and travel. He says presenting medals at the Summer Games is one of his most rewarding experiences.
- Lisa Hendricks – An employee of the Michigan Department of Corrections, Lisa has supported the Law Enforcement Torch Run for 12 years, participating in events across the state and helping raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics athletes. Her commitment is inspired by her two sisters with special needs and her passion for inclusion.
Inclusion Award
Honors those who create opportunities for involvement and empowerment, fostering a culture where all people feel valued and respected.
- Mary Belknap – A lifelong educator, Mary has devoted her career to teaching and mentoring learners of all ages and backgrounds. Influenced by her grandparents—founders of the St. Vincent de Paul Store in Jackson—Mary’s life is guided by compassion and inclusion. Her work as a Trauma and Resiliency Practitioner, service with the Great Start Collaborative, and volunteer efforts as a Master Gardener exemplify her belief in the “Power of One” to make a lasting difference.
Volunteer Award
Recognizes individuals or organizations who go above and beyond in dedicating their time and talents to charitable or educational causes.
- Kathy White – A lifelong Jackson resident and Michigan State University graduate, Kathy has dedicated decades to faith-based and community service. She founded the Bobby Lay Memorial Scholarship Fund, co-founded Sisters in Ministry to empower others, and serves as an associate minister and youth director at Lily Missionary Baptist Church. A survivor of two cerebral aneurysms, Kathy’s life stands as a testament to faith, resilience, and the power of service.
Tickets for the Harold White Sr. Awards Breakfast are available for $25 per person and may be purchased on the first floor of Jackson City Hall, 161 W. Michigan Ave., during business hours (8 a.m.–5 p.m., Monday–Friday).
This year’s breakfast will also feature a re-introduction of the Human Relations Commission to the community, including a historical reflection and tribute to the Harold White family. Following the event, awardee names will be added to the Harold White Memorial Marker at Downtown Jackson’s Horace Blackman Park.
