Ewen-TC Pulls Away Late to Defeat Concord in D4 Semifinal

(3-20-2025, 8:30PM): For the first time since 2012, the Concord Yellowjackets had the opportunity to play at the Breslin Center at MSU on Thursday, as they faced Ewen-Trout Creek in the MHSAA D4 Girls Basketball Semifinals.

Both teams struggled in the opening quarter, as Concord shot just 18% and Ewen-TC shot under 13% from the field. Cieara Barrett and Bradie Lehman scored the four points for Concord as they were even at 4-4.

Concord had their largest lead of the game (up to that point) in the second quarter, leading by as much as five with 2:52 left. The Yellowjackets went on a run of six straight points at the end of the first half, senior Grace Thorrez scored four of the six. 

Cieara Barrett scored seven points along with Bradie Lehman and Grace Thorrez each chipping in four to help Concord lead 15-12 at the half.

Both teams went back-and-forth in the third quarter, as five lead changes happened between the two teams. Ewen-Trout Creek scored eight of the last 10 points in the third quarter, but led by just two (25-23) after three quarters.

The Panthers size advantage down low and rebounding helped get the edge over Concord in the final quarter. The Yellowjackets scored just nine points in the second half as Ewen-Trout Creek defeated Concord 34-24 on Thursday evening. 

Bree Besonen led Ewen-Trout Creek with 15 points and 5 rebounds. Concord was led by Cieara Barrett with 9 points and 7 rebounds, Grace Thorrez added 8 points and 9 rebounds.

Concord finishes the season 21-7 overall with district and regional titles, and the best season in program history since 2012. “More face guarding and defensive pressure is what changed the tone in the second half” said Concord players postgame. “As long as they leave it all out on the floor and give it everything they got, I’m proud of them” said Concord coach Arshawn Parker.
