Boys Basketball

Napoleon 63, Hanover-Horton 41: The Pirates trailed at halftime but turned up the defense in the second half to win the Cascades Conference Crossover Title at Spring Arbor University. Grant Bradley scored 24 points – including 13 in the third quarter – to lead Napoleon to the title DeVonta Habern added 13 points and Holden Van Poppel finished with 12 points. Luke Soper and Logan Blackledge each scored 13 points for Hanover-Horton. 

Michigan Center 74, Jonesville 67: The Cardinals found themselves down by double digits in the first quarter but outscored the Comets 26-16 in the third quarter to pull ahead. Jayden Watson scored 22 points and Hadyn Hinkle added 19 points for Michigan Center in the crossover contest against Jonesville. Tre Collins added 11 points and three assists for Michigan Center. 

Wrestling Individual Regionals

Division 1 at Holt: Three Jackson High School wrestlers will be heading to the MHSAA state individual finals. Caden Bayer and Zander Resor finished third and fourth respectively at 138 pounds and Curtis Winters was third at 285 pounds for JHS. 

Division 2 at Mason: Three Northwest wrestlers and one from Western advanced out of the regional at Mason High School Saturday by finishing in the top four of their respective weight classes. Jeff Miller of Northwest backed up his district title with a regional championship at 144 pounds. Thomas Fall was third at 113 pounds and Blaine Anspaugh was also third at 138 pounds for the Mounties. Alex Trudell of Western finished fourth at 190 pounds advancing to the D-2 state individual finals. 

Division 3 at Constantine:  Eight Jackson County wrestlers advanced out of the D-3 regional at Constantine High School by finishing in the top four of their weight classes. Christian Millican of Columbia Central was third at 113 pounds; Napoleon wrestler Logan Hartman placed third at 120 pounds; Carson Warner of Napoleon was fourth at 157 pounds; Andrew Beadenkopf of Michigan Center placed fourth at 165 pounds; Mason Roth of Napoleon was a runner-up at 175 pounds; Brady Warner of Napoleon was second and Jack Reid of Grass Lake finished third at 190 pounds; and Dallas Smith of Napoleon placed fourth at 215 pounds. 

Division 4 at Hudson: A.J. Fielder of Hanover-Horton won a regional title with a victory at the Hudson regional at 132 pounds. His brother, David Fielder, was second at 126 pounds and teammate Gavin Berkeypile was fourth at 144 pounds for Hanover-Horton. Clayton Clark of East Jackson finished third at 157 pounds and Maverick Stergakos of Lumen Christi placed fourth at 215 pounds to advance to the state finals in two weeks. 

Division 4 at Mendon: Collin Thompson of Concord and Caleb Wendt of Springport are headed to the D-4 state individual wrestling finals in two weeks. Thompson finished second at 138 pounds and Wendt placed fourth at 157 pounds at the Mendon regional Saturday. 

Competitive Cheer Districts

Division 2 at Ypsilanti Lincoln: Northwest High School finished 10th with a score of 600. Western did not participate in the regional. It took a scored of 736 to advance to the D-2 regional. 

Division 4 at Hudson: Grass Lake was sixth (587) and Napoleon eighth (569) at Hudson High School. It took a score of 637 to advance out of the Hudson district. 

Bowling

Cascades Conference Singles Girls: Shandi Stark of Grass Lake won the Cascades Conference singles Saturday at JAX 60 with a score of 1,080 for six games. Julie Masternak of Homer and Tessa Wyngaert of East Jackson tied for second (1,034), Marielle Schafran of Grass Lake finished fourth (1,028), and Sydney Gallagher of Napoleon finished fifth (1,026). 

Cascades Conference Singles Boys: Andrew Sackett of Jonesville won the boys’ title with a six game total of 1,243. Joe Davis of Hanover-Horton was second (1,187), Max Schafran of Grass Lake was fourth (1,139), and teammate Frank Bednarski was fifth (1,136). 

Hockey

Jackson United 4, Oxford 2: The two teams were heading toward 20 goals after combining for six in the first period. But that was all of the scoring for the game. Oxford scored the first two goals then Jackson scored four in a row for a 4-2 lead after 17 minutes of action. JU goals were scored by Eric Bonser, Aiden Chappell, Wyatt Boteler, and Nick Baumgardner.

Lumen Christi 5, Northville 4: The Titans won a non-conference matchup Saturday at Optimist Ice Arena. Isaiah Dinverno and Jake King each scored a pair of goals for Lumen Christi. 

College Athletic Events

Men’s Basketball

Henry Ford 98, Jackson College 84: Henry Ford pulled ahead at the end of the first half and led 52-37. The Jets outscored Henry Ford 47-46 in the second half. Jackson is now 11-14 overall, 3-8 in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association. The Jets will travel to Mott Community College Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff. 

Huntington 80, Spring Arbor 76: Gabe Newhof scored 23 points and Kevyn Robertson added 22 points for SAU. 

Women’s Basketball

Spring Arbor 79, Huntington 69: Alize Tripp scored 23 points and Alana Nelson added 15 points and seven rebounds for Spring Arbor (21-5 overall, 12-4 Crossroads League). 

Baseball

Warner (FLA) 12, Spring Arbor 1: Aiden Brunin recorded two hits for Spring Arbor in the contest. 

Volunteer State CC 2, Jackson College 1: Brady Schrems had one hit and knocked in the only run for Jackson College. Nathan Tappenden pitched five strong innings giving up only one hit for JC (1-3 overall). 

Jackson College 8, Volunteer State 4: The Jets scored six times in the sixth inning to pull ahead. Jared Kramp had a pair of hits and three RBIs, Jamil Ramsey collected two hits and knocked in two runs, and Hayden Lowe finished with two hits for JC. Colin Presnar earned the pitching win giving up only one in in 2 1/3 innings.

Men’s Bowling

Regional Tournament at Royal Scot: Jackson College finished third Friday in the regional tournament earning a spot in the national tournament. All-region honors went to Charlie Teller who averaged 198 per game for fifth place and Tobyn LePeak who finished ninth averaging 194. Logan Schneider/Jackson Kremer finished eighth in doubles, LePeak-Teller were ninth in the doubles competition, and Parker Horvath-Trey Richmond were 10th.  Jackson College travels to Mount Pleasant for the MCCAA Bakers Tournament Friday.

Women’s Bowling

Regional Tournament at Royal Scot: Jackson College won the regional championship Friday at Royal Scot for the third consecutive season. All-region honors went to Abby Gutowski who averaged 183 and Erin VandenBrink who was fourth with a 180 average. Kaelin Pond-VandenBrink were second in the doubles, Olivia Palmer-Gutowski finished fourth, and Haley Wallace-Makenzie LaFountain were fifth. The Jets travel to Mount Pleasant for the MCCAA Bakers Tournament Friday then on to the national tournament.

Track and Field

Spring Arbor at Crossroads League Indoors: Camden Khon won the mile run in 4:12 at the Crossroads League Indoor Finals at Indianapolis. Emma Stewart of SAU won the pole vault with 3.67 meters and Allison Teed won the pentathlon shot put with a toss of 8.56 meters. Spring Arbor finished fifth in the men’s competition and the women were ninth.
