The first day of winter!  Thursday’s winter solstice marks the longest night of the year. The winter solstice — marking the longest night and fewest hours of daylight of the year — is today. The winter solstice is the precise moment at which the Northern Hemisphere is tilted farthest from the sun.

A weak low pressure system tracking south of Michigan will bring areas of light snow and light freezing rain, mainly tonight and Friday. Although the precipitation will be light, there may be just enough to create some minor travel impacts. Saturday is expected to be dry, but the arrival of colder air will bring an increase in snow showers Sunday into Christmas Day.
