(December 19, 2021 5:08 PM) When Ferris State University football won a NCAA Division II championship last night, there were a number of local athletes who were part of the celebrating team.

FSU defeated Valdosta State (Ga.) 58-17 in the title game at the McKinney ISD Stadium in Texas.

The Bulldogs finished off a magical season with a perfect 14-0 record, earning their first national title in school history.

Senior linebacker Liam Daly led the Bulldogs in tackles this season. The former Lumen Christi football player said winning a national title was something the team has been working toward.

“It means everything … we have been working for this for a long time,” Daly said after the dominant win.

Daly scored a touchdown for the Bulldogs in the national championship game on a pick-six.

“I forgot it even happened,” Daly said. “The coaches put me in the right position (on the play).

“I am so happy for our defense, our offense, the whole team, and everyone involved.”

Fellow LCCHS alumni Sam Girodat was seventh in tackles from his defensive lineman position for FSU.

Nick Thomas – also from Lumen Christi – is a linebacker on the team for FSU.

Jackson High School 2021 graduate Dorion Riley is also on the FSU football squad. Riley is listed as a running back on the Bulldogs’ active roster.

The Bulldogs were dominant on offense averaging more than 500 yards per game and scoring nearly 50 points per contest.

The defense averaged giving up less than 20 points per game.
