(September 27, 2021 3:09 PM)  General Materials, founded by Jackson native Frederick Schmid in 1952, is set to close in November. The company’s facility at 2995 Brooklyn Road is being sold to Amerhart. Headquartered in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Amerhart is an independent, family-owned wholesale distributor of lumber and building materials. Operating out of 10 locations in six states, Amerhart has an 80-year legacy of supplying the building industry in the Midwest. According to Amerhart President Chad Warpinski, “We had been searching for a new location in Michigan to expand our footprint and better serve our customers. The General Materials site checked all our boxes. We are particularly excited to have the talented and experienced individuals from General Materials joining the Amerhart team.”

General Materials is the oldest lumber company in Jackson. In operation for almost 70 years, General Materials serves the needs of Jackson’s contractors and homeowners with high-quality lumber and building materials. An inventory liquidation sale will open to the public on Wednesday, September 29, 2021. “We are grateful to the Jackson community for their nearly seven decades of support,” says General Materials President Andrew Woell. “The lumber business is based on relationships, and we truly appreciate the friendships that have developed over the years with our customers and suppliers. Our employees are like family to us. It was very important to us that they would have meaningful jobs that give them the opportunity to use their skills. As family-owned businesses, Amerhart and General Materials share similar values. I believe this transition is one that is beneficial for all parties involved. We wish the best for our employees and their new employer.”
