(8/26/23 10:30PM): The season opening matchup between Grass Lake and Royal Oak Shrine was moved to Saturday night due to power outages within the area, but it didn’t affect the way the Warriors performed tonight. They rolled from the beginning.
Seniors Robert Anderson and Jack Reid made catches in the opening drive, which led to a 9-yard rushing touchdown by Liam Metheringham with 9:04 left in the opening quarter.
Shrine was forced to punt on a three-and-out early, which gave the ball immediately back to Grass Lake. Brayden Lape threw an interception with 5:52 left and Shrine again couldn’t respond on offense.
A high snap allowed Liam Metheringham to make a special teams scoop and score for a 14-0 GL lead.
Robert Anderson continued his big night with a 70-yard punt return to make it 21-0 with 11:42 remaining in the first half. Metheringham also continued to shine, rushing for 50 yards on the next drive, including a 20-yard TD run to extend the lead to 28.
The defense of the Warriors was also strong on Saturday night, forcing two fumbles and for Shrine to punt a total of six times.
GL star quarterback Brayden Lape threw back-to-back touchdown passes to Robert Anderson late in the second quarter to make it 43-0.
Brodey Miller added on a four-yard rushing touchdown to make it 50-0 by halftime.
Coach Randy Cole and his team pumped the brakes in the second half and cruised to a 50-0 win on Saturday night.
Robert Anderson finished with two receiving touchdowns and a punt return for a TD. Liam Metheringham finished with three touchdowns and Brodey Miller added a touchdown for Grass Lake.
They will face Hanover Horton next week as they improve to 1-0 to start 2023.
