(3-14-2026, 12:50PM): After Concord’s lead was cut to just two with six minutes to play, the Yellowjackets ran away with it and outscored the Hurricanes 15-4 in the final minutes. Concord defeated Detroit Douglass 60-47 in the 2026 MHSAA Boys Basketball Division 4 state championship, winning the program’s first ever state title.
It was a tale of two halves in this one, as Concord trailed by four at the halftime break. The Yellowjackets committed 7 turnovers and shot just 3 of 10 from beyond the arc at the break, while being outscored 19-8 in the second quarter.
The game was tied at 41 apiece after the 3rd quarter, with five quick points by the Hurricanes in the last minute. Dimauvion Smith-Powe hit a three-pointer for Douglass followed by two free throws, and two FTs from Concord to help tie things up.
The Yellowjackets dominated the 4th quarter, outscoring Douglass 19-6 in the final eight minutes. Concord would go onto win 60-47 in the Breslin Center at Michigan State University, defeating Detroit Douglass and winning the program’s first ever state championship.
“It was fun today” said Concord HC Marcus Gill in the postgame press conference. “They ramped up their intensity on defense in the second quarter and made us play one on one, that’s not who we are”. “Just like last game, we didn’t play great all 32 minutes. But we played Concord basketball in the last 16 minutes of today’s game, and obviously proud of the outcome. We are a championship team because we have other guys. Jett had 4 fouls and everyone else stepped up like we’re supposed to.”
Connor Stevens finished with a monster 15 points and 19 rebound performance, his 18th double-double of the season. Stevens is committed to play collegiately at Trine University next year. Darrell Dean Jr. scored 15 points, and Jett Smith added 14 points. Damani Oliver led Detroit Douglass with 15 points, and Jacodi Nathan added 12 points.
Concord becomes the first boys basketball team from Jackson County to win a state championship since 1966. CHS finishes the season at 25-4 overall with back-to-back district titles, their first regional title since 1990, and now first ever state championship.
