(January 21, 2022 2:41 PM) A day before the state wrestling finals a year ago, Western High School student-athlete Dominic Honsinger took a mandatory COVID-19 test right before weigh-ins.

The test came up positive for COVID-19.

He was sent to the hospital to be retested, but that also came up positive.

Honsinger was out of the tournament due to the positive test.

But rather than let that setback spoil his future, Honsinger just worked a little harder.

And it has paid off this school year.

Western won its second district title and advanced to the regional final in football before losing to St. Joseph 49-13.

Honsinger is 25-0 this season wrestling at 285 pounds for the Panthers.

Western is having a great season on the mat as a team with a perfect 6-0 conference record.

“My dreams are becoming my reality,” Honsinger said following wins by the Panthers over Harper Creek and Lumen Christi. “It feels good knowing that our weightlifting program is pushing us to bigger goals.”

The Panthers are 19-3 on the season and appear to be the team to beat come districts. Fellow senior Lincoln Raczkowski is undefeated and Jacob Singleton is 24-1.

Honsinger understands the importance of working hard for himself and his teammates.

“You have to realize that every team is practicing, but what you do individually in your off time is important,” Honsinger said. “Wrestling is a lot of grit.

“I go out there and know how the match goes it is all about me.”

The senior expects to go to trade school following graduation, leaving behind sports. His father owns a heating and cooling business.

“I have been participating in sports since first grade,” Honsinger said. “I am really going to miss it.”
