
(January 1, 2022 4:15 PM) Michigan State University announced today that effective January 1, 2022, Michigan State athletics will require spectators at indoor athletic events to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of the event. The policy applies to men’s and women’s basketball, hockey, wrestling and gymnastics home events. The first scheduled event with the policy in effect will be the men’s basketball game against Nebraska on Jan. 5.
Michigan State’s indoor mask mandate remains in effect for all home athletic events.
Earlier this week, four Spartan men’s basketball players were sidelined with COVID-19.
The COVID-19 vaccine requirement applies to all attendees ages 12 and up. To meet the vaccine requirement, spectators must show their COVID-19 vaccination card or a digital image along with a photo ID matching the name on the card. Michigan State University students, faculty and staff can show their University ID as proof of compliance with the university’s vaccine mandate. Attendees who cannot provide proof of vaccination should bring a photo ID and either a printout or photo of their negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours before the event start time. People ages 17 and under accompanied by an adult will not be required to show a photo ID.
Fans are encouraged to arrive early to allow additional time for entry and verification. No testing opportunities will be available for event attendees on site. Prior to arrival guests should have their negative COVID-19 results completed and in hand.
Earlier this week, the University of Michigan announced it will institute a proof of COVID-19 vaccination or negative-test protocol for indoor athletic events. Face masks continue to be required and must be worn during all home indoor athletic events.
All guests and working personnel ages 12 and older will be required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination OR a negative COVID-19 PCR or rapid test taken within 72 hours of the event.
Michigan State and Michigan join other Big Ten schools Illinois, Maryland, Rutgers and Northwestern in mandating fan vaccine requirements.
