Baseball, a tradition formed in the land of the free.

History of BaseballEver since it was established in the U.S, baseball has been one the most popular sports in the country, with major tournament held every year, two different divisions and thirty teams, it’s not hard to see why it is called the “national pastime”. Dating back to the 18th century, English immigrants brought the game to America, where it steadily evolved into the version known worldwide today. By the late 19th century, baseball was widely recognized as the national sport of the United States, setting up a tradition that endures till today and shapes the lives of many Americans every day. Now, let’s get up close and personal with one of those thirty MLB team, the Detroit Tigers, representing the state of Michigan.

City born Tigers.

Founded in 1894 in its namesake city, the Detroit Tigers began as a member of the minor league Western League division, and is currently the only western team still based in its original city. Also, they the oldest franchise of one name, one city in the American League. The team’s stadium was constructed in 1896 and was named “Benneth Park” just west of downtown Detroit, then they moved to Navin Field in 1912 which was expanded in 1938 and changed its name to Briggs Stadium, in 1961 it changed names again to Tiger Stadium and stayed that way until 1999, and finally changed to Comerica Park in 2000. Members of the American League Central Division in Major League Baseball (MLB) the Detroit Tigers are one of the most popular and well-known teams both in the country and worldwide, with its trademark old English font D on caps, shirts and even trousers all over the world.

The Detroit Tigers stand as the 8th team with most hall of famers in the history of baseball, having the honor of inducting one of the first hall of famers in the history of baseball with Ty Cobbs, considered one of the best baseball players of all time and credited with setting 90 MLB records during his career.

The Kitties from Motor city have won four World Series titles, in 1935,1945,1968 and 1984. Also, they have amassed eleven American League pennants, and four American League Central Division championships, doing so concurrently from 2011 to 2014. As one of the most successful teams in the American League, its current roster boasts a strong line up and also one of the best baseball players of the 90s, Miguel “Miggy” Cabrera.

As mentioned before, the Tigers have held in their ranks many amazing baseball players, and if we had to bring two to the bench, they would be Ty Cobbs from the old generation, and Miguel Cabrera from the new one.

Ty Cobbs

ty cobbsNicknamed the “Georgia Peach”, Cobbs is widely considered one of the best players of all time, setting 90 MLB records during his career, many of which still stand today: his combined total of scored and batted in runs (4065), the highest career batting average (.366), most career batting titles (11-12), most stolen bases (892), and was also the youngest player to score 4000 hits and 2000 runs. Mixed in ill-intended controversy, Cobbs advocated for the inclusion of African American players and was usually seen talking and practicing with African American players including, Jackie Robinson the first player to break the “Color Barrier” in professional baseball. Cobbs died on July 17, 1961 of a diabetic coma surrounded by friends and family.

Miguel Cabrera.

Miguel “Miggy” Cabrera, a Venezuelan baseball player with an impressive record on his back, Miguel began his professional career as player for the Tigres de Aragua in Venezuela at 16 years of age. In 1999 he was signed as a free agent by the Florida Marlins and quickly rose in their minor league ranks. He debuted in MLB at age 20 in 2003, contributing to the Marlins World title that year. He was traded to the Detroit Tigers in 2007 and has been part of the main roster ever since. One of the most awarded players in recent years, Cabrera also broke the long standing “curse” of the Batting Triple Crown in 2012, 45 years after the last player to do so.
