(June 6, 2021 3:18 PM) While other schools were arriving in 76-passenger buses and motor coaches, the Grass Lake High School girls’ track and field team could have made it to the Division 3 state track and field finals in a sedan.
Maybe a Lexus.
The Warrior rode the wave of wins by Lexus Bargesser in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 state track and field finals at Jenison High School on Saturday.
Grass Lake competed with four athletes.
“We couldn’t even win a conference championship because we were shorthanded,” GLHS girls’ Coach Jennifer Taylor said. “As the season went on, we realized we were improving.
“We brought four girls with a lot of heart and soul with competitive spirits.”
The Warriors scored 30 points when Bargesser won the 100-meter dash (12.12 seconds), the 200-meter dash (25.3), and set a new Division 3 state record in winning the 400-meter dash (55.54).
Kailee Sandoval finished sixth in the 800-meter run (2:20) setting up the Warriors for the 1,600-meter relay. Grass Lake had to win the event to claim first place at the meet. A second-place finish would tie PW.
“The 1,600-meter relay was tough for me because it was my sixth event of the day (because of prelims in the 100 and 200) and I had girls to catch,” Bargesser said.
“That meant the most because we tied for first in the state.”
The Warriors finished behind Shepherd (4:10) as Bargesser passed several runners in the final 400 meters.
Both Grass Lake and Pewamo-Westphalia will go down in the record books as state champions with 41 points.
The Bargesser family and Grass Lake fans maybe enjoyed the best brother-sister finish in MHSAA history.
Brennen Bargesser also won the 100-, 200-, and 400-meter dash events, and was on a winning 400-meter relay team.
“It is one of the best days ever… it was so cool siblings could do this,” Lexus Bargesser said.
She has been setting her sites on winning the three sprint events all season.
“I have been thinking about it for some time, but now that it has happened, I couldn’t be any more blessed,” Lexus said.
