Stockton Finds a Home at Grass Lake

(April 23, 2023 8:00 AM ET) Grass Lake High School track and field athlete Andrew Stockton has experienced starting over a number of times in his short life.

Along the way, he has found a home in Grass Lake. 

Stockton is one of the top sprinters in Jackson County. He is currently third in the 200-meter dash (23.62) and sixth in the 100-meter dash (11.7). 

The GLHS senior has already won a number of medals at the state meet and was a member of the 2021 Division 3 state title team.

But cheering on his teammates and being enthusiastic about his school is what Stockton is all about.

“I love seeing my teammates win … I have always been an enthusiastic kid,” Stockton said. 

Stockton was adopted by his parents Ramona and Charles two weeks after being born. He lived in the Grass Lake area but went to school at Chelsea kindergarten through eighth grade. Stockton made the move to GLHS in his freshman year.

“I just wanted a new start at a new school,” Stockton said of the switch. “My parents have always been my rock and have always supported me.

“I just love them.”

Being a solid football player and track and field athlete didn’t hurt Stockton.

“People in Grass Lake will love you if you give them a reason,” Stockton said. “I knew some people here, but Grass Lake took me in like I have been there forever.”

Stockton has been a stalwart on the football field and on the track for the Warriors. Grass Lake lapped the field by winning the Division 3 state track and field team finals in 2021. Stockton was on the state winning 400-meter relay team and on the medal-winning 800-meter relay team.

When a good portion of the football and track teams graduated, Stockton found himself as the newly appointed leader.

“It was tough, but I knew my role needed to increase to become a leader,” Stockton said. 

Stockton looks to take back the conference title in track and field this spring.

“Napoleon stole it from us last year … we are coming to take it back,” Stockton said. 

The senior plans to play football at Trine University next fall. 

But he will always remember the bonds created at Grass Lake.

“I have made some great bonds at Grass Lake, and we will always be friends,” Stockton said. “It’s a small school where you can make some really good friends.”
