MHSAA Changes to Soccer, Basketball and More for 2019-2020
JTV Sports | May 10th, 2019 | Gabriel Schray Jackson, Michigan– The Michigan High School Athletic Association is tweaking the basketball playoff system following their May 5th and 6th meeting. Several changes are being made at the district level. Beginning with the 2019-20 school year, girls and boys basketball and soccer will employ a seeding process to place the top two teams in every District on opposite sides of that bracket, guaranteeing those two teams could not play each other before the District championship game. The district pairings will be set two weeks before the postseason begins. Teams not seeded first or second will be randomly placed in the district bracket. "The addition of seeding at the District level in basketball and soccer and multiple adjustments to the process used to select the playoff field for 11-player football were among the most notable actions taken by the Representative Council of the Michigan High School Athletic Association during its annual Spring Meeting, May 5-6 in Gaylord," said the beginning of the press release by the MHSAA. MHSAA Changes to HS Football for 2020
JTV Sports | May 10th, 2019 | Gabriel Schray Jackson, Michigan– The Michigan High School Athletic Association is tweaking the high school football playoff system. Beginning in the fall of 2020, a team’s strength of schedule will be the main factor in whether a school is in or out of the 256-team playoff field. Schools will now be rewarded, even if they lose, for playing against a quality opponent. Pirates Host Cardinals in Baseball
JTV Sports | May 10th, 2019 | Gabriel Schray Jackson, Michigan– The Michigan Center Cardinals Varsity Baseball team traveled to Napoleon, Michigan to face off with the Napoleon Pirates on May 8th, 2019. The teams came into the contest with records of 17-2 (Cardinals) and 16-0 (Pirates). The teams split the double header. The first match went to Michigan Center. The Cardinals bested the Pirates by a tally of 9-8 after ten innings of play. In the second contest, the Pirates came away with a win. After six innings the final score was 3-1. "We have a group of seniors that have been with us for four years," said Napoleon's Head Coach Jeff Mohr. "They're a great group of kids. They set the tone in the off-season. Worked hard. Lifted." As of today, Michigan Center's record is 17-3. Head Coach Jerry Slack, in his 15th year coaching High School sports, is very optimistic about what is coming down the stretch. Spring Arbor University has 5 named to All-Crossroads Team
JTV Sports | May 10th, 2019 | Chris Bauman Spring Arbor, Michigan– The Spring Arbor University baseball team has been honored with five selections to the All-Crossroads League teams, the league office announced on Thursday. Seniors Chris Triplett, Conner Lengerich and Duncan Patterson were selected to the all-league team while Lengerich also was awarded a Gold Glove. Earning Honorable Mention recognition was junior Gavin Harris and sophomore Evan Lorey. Triplett, a four-year starter, capped off his outstanding career by earning his first all-league honor. After receiving honorable mention honors a season ago, the senior shortstop enjoyed his best season as a Cougar in 2019, setting career-highs in every offensive category. He led the team in batting average (.377), hits (66), runs scored (53), home runs (10) and stolen bases (25) while also ranking top-three in the Crossroads League in each of those category. His 10 home runs were the most by an SAU player since 2009 when Eric Vojkofsky belted 12. Over his career, Triplett has played in 188 games, which is tied for the eighth-most in the program's 56-year history. Conley Named All-Crossroads League
JTV Sports | May 10th, 2019 | Chris Bauman Spring Arbor, Michigan– Spring Arbor University senior Cameron Conley closed out his outstanding career by earning his first All-Crossroads League selection, as announced by the league office Wednesday. Conley becomes Spring Arbor's first all-league performer since the 2014-15 season when Cody Lysher secured the honor. The Grand Ledge, Michigan product put together a spectacular campaign in his final season with the Cougars. He placed in the top-three in a total of three events, including one runner-up finish, and recorded the best scoring average of his four-year career, posting a team-leading 74.6 in 18 rounds played. His season-low round was a five-under par 67 he fired at the Lou Collins Memorial Classic at Bedford Valley Golf Club in the fall, which tied the program's all-time record set by SAU Hall of Famer Roy Adair in 2001 at the same course. Conley has either ranked first or second on the team in scoring average in each of his four seasons. He has 10 career top-10 finishes and eight career top-5 finishes. JTV Sports | May 10th, 2019 | Chris Bauman Spring Arbor, Michigan– The 2019 Crossroads League Track & Field Championships, hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University, came to a close on Friday with the Spring Arbor University women's team earning a fifth place finish and the men's team placing eighth. The SAU women accumulated 59.5 points and the men finished with 29. In total, the Cougars recorded five All-Crossroads League performances, including two league champions as Kyara Black won the high jump and Max Whittredge claimed first in the 800 meter run. Bethel College captured the men's team title with a total of 172.5 points while Indiana Wesleyan ran away with the women's championship, collecting 218.5 points. After finishing third at the league championships in the 800 a season ago, Max Whittredge turned in a personal-best 1:54.28 on Friday to capture his first league title. The 4x800 meter relay team – made up of Deion Feldpausch, Timothy Nelson, Trent Smith and Whittredge – qualified for the NAIA outdoor national championships. The Cougars completed the race in fourth place with an NAIA B standard time of 7:47.55. Zach Lamphere came up just short of earning All-Crossroads League honors. High School Ice Hockey: Jackson United in SEC

The team finished 21-2-0. The Vikings and Head Coach Andy Sinkovitz will be looking to build off of that success here this season. Coach Sinkovitz says that the team has a shorter bench than in past years, which allows for more ice time for Viking players. “This leaves it up to the players to seize the playing time,” said Sinkovitz. “It’s still early, but a couple of the guys are already starting to develop into key players.” After five games the team stands at 2-5. A power outage occurred just before the team played Kalamazoo Portage Northern. A transformer nearby the rink went out and killed the power to the Oshtemo area around the ice arena- so the game was cancelled. The Vikings have been potent on offense, scoring 21 goals in seven games (three goals per game on average). JU has struggled defensively however, allowing 28 goals over the same span (four goals per game on average). It’s a narrow enough margin that the program could easily…
