(August 12, 2021 11:17 AM) Having a .500 season in a COVID-19 shortened season would be satisfying for some teams.
Not at Lumen Christi Catholic High School.
The Titans have won the Michigan High School Athletic Association state football finals three of the last five seasons.
Last year Lumen Christi finished 5-5 overall, 2-3 in the Interstate-8 Conference.
The Titans were 2-4 during the regular season but won three playoff games in Division 7 before losing to Schoolcraft 29-22 in the regional finals.
“We are really pleased with the off-season work our players have put in,” longtime Coach Herb Brogan said. “They have put in the work and are ready for the grind.”
Not having preseason workouts – especially in the weight room – may have been one of the reasons the Titans got off to a slow start in 2020.
“Without having a chance to work out in the weight room, it was hard to build team chemistry last year,” senior linebacker Cole Simpson said.
Simpson is one of numerous seniors back for the Titans in 2021.
Others include Colin Morrow (LB), Brendan Daly (RB), Xemines Willis (OT/DL), Sam Putman (OT), Ted Ahlers (QB), Caden Martines (DB) and Colin O’Neil (DB).
The seniors have adopted the motto “We not Me” for the 2021 season.
“We have to understand that the team and its goals are greater than me,” senior Ahlers said.
The Titans have a number of sophomores and juniors expected to make a difference in 2021.
Sophomores Aiden Pastoriza (T) and Luke Smith (T) are two players expected to shore up the offensive and defensive lines for the Titans.
Juniors Joe Lathers (QB/DB), Charlie Konkle, Cooper Cumberworth (OL), Devian Franklin (LB) and Derek Walker (RB) are players the Titans will count on this season.
Ralph Golden (TE/DE), Nicholas Wilson (RB), Cooper Keene (WR), Caden Martines (WR), and Caden Martines (DB) are players expected to fill positions for the Titans.
Lumen Christi will face New Lothrop – the defending state D-7 champions – and seven consecutive Division 3 teams in the Interstate Eight Conference in 2021.
