Rick Snyder today issued the following statement in honor of Patriot Day and calls for the lowering of U.S. flags in remembrance of the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001: “We join together as Americans to remember the innocent lives lost in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and the sacrifices made. We keep them and their families in our thoughts and prayers. “Patriot Day honors those who perished, first responders, and men and women who demonstrated incredible bravery and compassion.  This day will forever be a reminder of the heroic individuals who stood tall in the face of evil to help their fellow Americans. “We’re grateful for all first responders who walk in their footsteps, serving their communities.  We also thank the courageous men and women in the armed forces who have paid the ultimate price for freedom, those serving today, and our brave veterans. “On Friday, Sept. 11, the state of Michigan will lower its flags to half-staff to honor Patriot Day and the victims of the attacks.  Please do so as well at your home or workplace. Fall Hydrant Flushing to Begin

The City of Jackson Water Department will start the Fall Fire Hydrant Flushing Program on Monday, September 21st. Flushing will start in the Southwest Section of the City and will finish in the Northeast Section approximately (3) weeks later. Flushing will be take place from 7:30am to 3:00pm, Monday through Friday. This semi-annual flushing is necessary to wash iron and other sediment out of the water mains. This sediment does not affect water quality, but can cause water to become discolored. The water is safe to drink and discoloration often disappears within a short time. Motorists are urged to slow down where flushing is taking place and to exercise caution. Residents are also advised not to wash clothing while lines are being flushed in or around their neighborhoods. In addition, it is always advisable to check the color of the water before doing any laundry. If you would like further information, please call the Department of Public Works-Water at (517) 788-4170 or visit their website at www.CityofJackson.org.

City Declares September 23 “Louise Nevelson Day”

Photo of Dedication of Summer Night Tree courtesy Ella Sharp Museum JACKSON, MI - Marking the birthday of famous sculptor and artist Louise Nevelson, Jackson City Council members declared Sept. 23 to be Louise Nevelson Day during their meeting this week. The late, Russian-born artist created the sculpture “Summer Night Tree” and presented it to the city of Jackson in 1978. The 30-foot tall steel compilation of geometric shapes painted black rests on the corner of Francis Street and Michigan Avenue in downtown Jackson. “Louise Nevelson is one of the most celebrated 20th Century sculptors,” said Janet Meyer, chairwoman of the Jackson Public Arts Commission. “Her vision and gift to Jackson is priceless and we are thrilled to be honoring her by celebrating Louise Nevelson Day in our community.” JPAC submitted the resolution marking the new holiday to City Council on Tuesday, Sept. 8. Council voted 6-0 to approve the resolution; Councilwoman Kimberly Jaquish, 2nd Ward, was absent. “We are thrilled to be able to share this amazing artist’s work with the students of Jackson County,” said Thomas McMillen-Oakley, member of JPAC. “Nevelson’s artwork is always one of the favorites when we visit the area museums and public areas. Plenty on the Line: Marshall-Western Preview

By Mike Moore Staff Writer  There really wasn’t a way to script what happened last year. In fact, had someone had the screenplay of what was going to happen, before it did, believers would have been tough to come by. Still, there’s a reason the games aren’t played on paper, and the 2014 meeting between Marshall and Western might as well have been played in an arena league. “I think both teams learned some lessons from that one,” Marshall football coach Jason Stealy said of Marshall’s 45-44 overtime victory over the Panthers on Sept. 12, 2014. “The lessons we’ve preached since that game is coming into every week ready to play from the start,” said Western’s Dave Mifsud. His team trailed Marshall 35-10 at one point, before roaring back to force overtime. The effort was spoiled in overtime, and the Panthers, 2-0 at the time, lost five in a row and ended the season 4-5. A year later, the teams are set to meet again, with plenty on the line for both. Western is again 2-0, again taking aim at a first playoff berth in program history, and again, having to get past a Marshall team that’s won 10 in…
