Defense will define them

Smoyer says success of this year’s Napoleon girls rests on the defensive side   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Napoleon – Sure, the old saying centers on defense winning championships.   Steve Smoyer’s focus is more on the everyday.   And that’s why the Napoleon High girls basketball coach said this week that for his squad to have success, in regular games or title games, the defense will be the key this winter.   “With this year and with this group, if we can defend, we’re going to be good,” Smoyer said. “There are teams out there, teams we’re going to face, that can score. If we defend the goal, we’re going to be in good shape.”   The Pirates went 16-7 last year, but have six seniors back on the roster, and, so far, have a group that seem to be taking things more serious, according to Smoyer.   “I think we learned some lessons last year,” he said. Smoyer is in his second stint with Napoleon and his fifth year overall. “This seems like a smarter team.”   But still one without a ton of speed or size.   So, defense will be paramount.   “Last year,…

Confident to improve

Munz ready to see Jackson High girls basketball take big step forward   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson – This was a youthful team, and by youthful, we’re talking hardly any varsity experience.   It was also a team without a coach until shortly before the 2014-15 season officially started.   By the end of the winter campaign, the Jackson High girls basketball team had taken some needed strides in the right direction, but still closed up shop with a 6-16 overall record.   Now in his second season, coach Elliot Munz expects things to be different, and by different, we’re talking better.   “We have some pieces in place to be much better,” Munz said. “The girls have one more year of varsity experience under their belt. Remember, we only had three seniors last year, most girls were new to varsity basketball, and I was in my first year, starting very late with the team. A lot is different now.”   Munz said it started with a productive offseason, and although early, signs have been good so far as to that paying off.   “They are playing very confidently,” he said. “We have some great senior leadership…
