Celebrate with Swing’n the Holidays at Potter Center

Tap your feet to the jive holiday sounds of Swing’n the Holidays: Featuring The Jive Aces & Special Guests, The Satin Dollz, performing at the Potter Center at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13. Direct from London, The Jive Aces are renowned for their superior musicianship and spectacular stage show, and are widely heralded as the UK’s Premiere Swing Band. They will welcome special guests, Los Angeles-based The Satin Dollz. Having become the first-ever band to reach the semi-finals of “Britain’s Got Talent” in 2012 following up with a performance for Her Majesty The Queen as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and performances for both the Olympic and Paralympic celebrations, The Jive Aces have truly established themselves as the UK’s top jive & swing band. They came together as a group of lads from London drawn by their love for a style and music that outclassed anything around. The music was hot jive that had the beat, energy and enthusiasm of rock ‘n’ roll and the fun and rhythm of big band swing all rolled into one. Their musical journey took them from Elvis Presley to Bill Haley and from Louis Prima to Frank Sinatra. This was the sound that…

Lofty goals

Northwest girls look to build on last season’s 19-5 final record   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson – If last year was good, well, this season could be one to remember.   When the Northwest girls basketball team takes the floor for the first time next Tuesday at Grass Lake, the squad will be doing so with an impressive resume to fall back on, and some very lofty goals to live up to.   “Our approach every year is to compete for championships, whether that’s in the conference or the district and beyond,” coach Ryan Carroll said simply. “With that said, I think we’ve set the bar pretty high and we’re taking a head-on approach to that goal all season.”   The Mounties went 19-5 last winter, reaching the regional round for the second time in three years. Their 10-2 mark in the Interstate 8 Conference was second only to undefeated (12-0) Marshall High.   But the lofty goals — winning the conference, district and beyond — aren’t simply based on what was done last winter, but who did it.   Almost an entire group that’s back in the mix.   We brought back seven girls from last year’s…

Better with time

Thomas expects Jackson College hoops team to get better as the season progresses  By Mike Moore Staff Writer  Jackson – The season started with a 30-point loss on the road. Two days later, a six-point loss. Since then three wins in four games. And that’s exactly the progression Jackson College men’s basketball coach Carl Thomas expects from his 2015-16 team. Better with time. “We’re expecting a very competitive year,” Thomas said. “We have some very talented guys, even if they are guys that a lot of people haven’t heard of. The last two years we’ve lost some kids at the break, but that won’t be the case this year. We have some student-athletes here who plan on being around for a while. We’ve targeted some kids who can play the game and keep with it.” After a 104-86 victory against Marygrove College Nov. 20, the Jets were 3-3 on the season. Thomas said one of the main things he likes about this year’s group is the work ethic. Practicing too hard is never a fear. Putting in a little extra effort isn’t something that’s questioned. “These guys play hard, they practice hard,” Thomas said. “They compete hard. They’ve bonded pretty…

Spring Arbor defeats Carroll in NAIA Opening Round

BRIGHTON, Mich. – The No. 4 ranked Spring Arbor University women’s soccer team will be returning to Orange Beach, Alabama for the second straight season after defeating No. 25 Carroll College (Mont.) 3-0 in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round on Saturday.   Heavy snow in the area forced the two teams to move the match, which was originally scheduled to be played at the Cougar Soccer Complex, indoors to the Legacy Center Sports Complex in Brighton, Michigan. While it may have been cold outside, the Cougars were red-hot inside.   Not even Carroll (14-6-2), who entered the night ranked among the best in the country allowing just 12 goals in 21 matches the season, was able to slow down the high-powered Spring Arbor attack. The Cougars stunned the Fighting Saints tallying three goals in the first 20 minutes, including one by senior Nikki Bonnema less than a minute after the opening whistle. The Carroll goalkeeper came out to punch away a cross sent in by freshman Lauren Orr, but the ball was redirected before she could get a hand on it. The loose ball eventually found the feet of Bonnema who was able to slip a shot through before…
