Governor Whitmer Signs Executive Order Extending Protections for Nursing Homes Residents and Maintaining Special Hours of Operations at Grocery Stores for Vulnerable Michiganders

(July 13, 2020 11:48 AM) Today, Governor Whitmer signed Executive Orders 2020-148 and 2020-149, extending COVID-19 adaptation in long-term care facilities to protect residents and staff, and extending existing safety measures, including 2 hours a week of reserved shopping time for vulnerable populations, to protect consumers and employees at grocery stores and pharmacies.   “The frontline workers across the state have been the heroes of this pandemic and we must do everything we can to protect both them and our most vulnerable Michiganders.” said Governor Whitmer. “This virus is still widespread and poses a real danger to our families, and these extensions will be crucial in protecting both frontline workers, customers and our most vulnerable populations. I urge each and every one of us to do our part through physical distancing and masking up to help fight COVID-19.”   Executive Order 2020-148 maintains the strong infection control protocols in nursing homes the governor put in place at the outset of this crisis, and protects residents from eviction and employees from discriminatory action for staying home when exhibiting symptoms. Under the order, a long-term care facility is required to take specific precautions when a resident exhibits symptoms of COVID-19 — including informing employees of the facility. The order also requires nursing homes to use reasonable efforts to create dedicated units for residents affected…

Changes at Center for Family Health in Response to Pandemic

(July 13, 2020 10:40 AM) The Center for Family Health is making changes to keep patients even safer in the new world of COVID-19 and beyond.  “Three times a week we talk about our processes and how we can improve our policies,” said Kim Hinkle, the Quality Improvement Director for CFH. While no one knows what the “new normal” will ultimately be, the Center has already made some decisions about doing things differently. Starting soon, the Center will enact a system to avoid situations where patients gather together in waiting-room lobbies prior to appointments with providers. “We are going to start contact-less registration and sign-in,” Hinkle said.  The system, which will stay in place for the immediate future, will have patients wait in their cars when they arrive for appointments. When they are ready to see the provider, patients will be notified to come inside. Several changes to CFH facilities are already in the works. The revolving door at the entrance to the Downtown Facility at 505 N. Jackson Street will be permanently removed because everyone who uses it must touch it. The revolving door will be replaced with a hands-free automatic door. Ventilation systems at the Downtown Facility are in…
