Chappell Putting up Numbers for Jackson United Hockey

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (January 29, 2023 8:00 AM) Western High School junior Aiden Chappell said he is more of a “numbers guy” when it comes to subjects he likes in school. He has been putting up solid numbers for Jackson United on the ice. Chappell has been the points leader in Jackson for nearly two months of the high school hockey season.  He has 21 total points after putting up 27 points a year ago – 20 goals and seven assists. The assists are up for Chappell and it appears as if he will surpass 27 points in 2022-2023.  But JU has been struggling to light the lamp on a consistent basis.  “It (the scoring) has been up and down, but we have not been scoring as much as we would like,” Chappell said. “We just have to keep putting in the work on the ice.” Chappell is one of 14 players from Western listed on the JU roster – a co-op team with players from Jackson, Grass Lake, Northwest, Michigan Center, and Jackson Christian.  “I have played with pretty much all of them (the Western players) throughout the years,” Chappell said. “It takes a minute to get…

Girls basketball Leslie 72, Concord 52: Cece Barrett scored 22 points for Concord in the non-conference loss at home Saturday.  East Jackson 53, Morenci 33: East Jackson saddled Morenci with its first loss of the season with “phenomenal defense by Addy Rudd and Priya Mericle,” according to Coach Mike Mericle. Mariah Kerley scored 29 points and Kennedy Goodwin added 14 points for East Jackson (10-6).  Wrestling Grass Lake Invitational: Josh Frailey of Hanover-Horton was second at 150 pounds; Nick Herbert placed sixth at 165 pounds for Jackson; Ty Farmer of Columbia finished fifth at 175 pounds; Malik Monroe of Jackson finished third at 215 pounds; Kyle Bonner was second and Reece Deshazor was third at 285 pounds for the Vikings; Nathan Ostrosky of Columbia Central finished sixth at 106 pounds; Trevor Morehouse finished second for Jackson at 113 pounds and Christian Millican of Columbia Central was fifth; A.J. Boys basketball Onsted 71, Columbia Central 49 Concord 70, Union City 59: Mekhi Wingfield scored 20 points as the Yellow Jackets celebrated a Snowcoming victory over Union City.  East Jackson 73, Vandercook Lake 26 Hanover-Horton 65, Manchester 41: The Comets held Manchester to 24 points in the first three quarters of the game. Luke Soper finished with 24 points and Logan Blackledge added 17 points for Hanover-Horton.  Napoleon 57, Grass Lake 49: Grant Bradley scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Trent Jester added 15 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists for the Pirates.
