Winter Music Celebration Warms Up Michigan Theatre with Live Music Feb. 21

Celebrate Mardi Gras with a “Winter Music Celebration” on Feb. 21 at the Michigan Theatre of Jackson, featuring the Jackson College Community Concert Band and Jazzy Jets. The concert begins at 7 p.m. This performance tradition at the downtown landmark started in February 2020 in response to requests for more performances and to connect with a weekday/downtown audience. Additionally, the historic Michigan Theater of Jackson offers a wonderful experience to audience members and performers alike! This free performance features the fully instrumented Jazzy Jets performances of “Caravan” as performed in the movie “Whiplash,” Chicken Scratch, and Pharrell Williams’s “Happy.” The Community Concert Band will present Tchaikovsky’s “Dance of the Jesters,” Gustav Holst’s “Mars,” band member and professional composer Chris Evan Hass’ original piece “Il Nostro Ragozzo Dolce,” and even a return of the group’s most requested encore of all time, Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Both ensembles are led by Liberal Arts Department Chair and Instrumental Music Lead Faculty, Dan Bickel. “We’ll even add in some traditional jazz in the New Orleans style to celebrate the occasion,” Bickel said. College & Career Access Center FAFSA Event. The CCAC President’s Day FAFSA Event - Monday, February 20th - the College & Career Access Center will hold its annual President’s Day FAFSA Event. This will be a hybrid on-site and Zoom workshop. Students can come visit us in our Jackson Crossing office or stay home in the comfort of their pajamas and attend virtually. Eight Girls Qualify for State Individual Wrestling Finals By Jeff Steers JTV Sports Eight Jackson County female wrestlers qualified for the Michigan High School Athletic Association wrestling finals on Sunday during regional tournaments. The wrestlers finished in the top four of their weight classes to advance. This year the MHSAA sponsored four regional tournaments – instead of only two – with the top four making the finals. The MHSAA individual finals are scheduled for March 3, 4 at Ford Field in Detroit. Here is a listing of the state qualifiers, their school, grade, overall record, and placement at the regional tournament. Fie Henriksen, East Jackson, sophomore, 7-19, finished second at 170 pounds at the Girls Regional Tournament at Birmingham Groves High School Sunday. Beach Earns Regional Individual Wrestling Title for the Mounties

By Jeff Steers JTV Sports (February 19, 2023 8:00 AM) The sentence wrestling, regional, and Cameron Beach never came together until this year. The senior has experienced mixed results this week in regional wrestling for the Mounties. Northwest lost 36-35 in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 team regional Wednesday. But the Mounties rebounded with seven state qualifiers at the D-2 individual regional at home Saturday. Beach, competing in his first individual regional, earned a championship with a 4-1 win in the final at 113 pounds. “I was a weird match as I got the first takedown and rode it out,” Beach said of the individual final. He improved to 34-6 on the season with the win. Things weren’t so rosy on Wednesday as the Mounties led by five points heading into the final match – and led handily in the 120 pound weight class – but the Mountie wrestler fell and passed out. Here are the wrestlers, school, overall record, grade, and placement at regionals. Division 2 at Northwest Adam Haselius, Northwest, 46-0, senior, earned a regional title at 215 pounds.
