Springport Falls in Battle for Big Eight Conference Basketball Title If someone had told Springport High School girls’ basketball Coach Rick Saldana that the Spartans would be playing its last Big Eight Conference game of the season for a title, he probably would have believed it. But he may have been the only one – outside of his team. Springport graduated half of its team from 2022 and only had two starters returning to the 2022-2023 squad. But the Spartans found ways to win and could have tied Bronson for the conference title with a home win on Monday. But the Vikings made a couple of big runs pulling out a 47-39 win. Bronson finishes the conference season with a perfect record in the Big Eight. “They are a long and solid team,” Coach Saldana said. “I thought we would be more patient (shooting) … but that is on me.” Springport trailed 10-4 after the first eight minutes of action, but tied Bronson at 10-all two-and-a-half…

Winter Music Celebration.  7 PM.   Celebrate Mardi Gras with a “Winter Music Celebration” on Feb. 21 at the Michigan Theatre of Jackson, featuring the Jackson College Community Concert Band and Jazzy Jets. The concert begins at 7 p.m.  This performance tradition at the downtown landmark started in February 2020 in response to requests for more performances and to connect with a weekday/downtown audience. Additionally, the historic Michigan Theater of Jackson offers a wonderful experience to audience members and performers alike!  This free performance features the fully instrumented Jazzy Jets performances of “Caravan” as performed in the movie “Whiplash,” Chicken Scratch, and Pharrell Williams’s “Happy.”  The Community Concert Band will present Tchaikovsky’s “Dance of the Jesters,” Gustav Holst’s “Mars,” band member and professional composer Chris Evan Hass’ original piece “Il Nostro Ragozzo Dolce,” and even a return of the group’s most requested encore of all time, Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Enjoy the concert, a bag of popcorn and a drink, and experience a piece of Jackson's historic beauty! Marketplace Manna Expands, Plans Workshop for Downtown Business

(February 20, 2023 5:43 PM) Al and Diane Mellinger have spent years teaching others entrepreneurial skills through missionary work and their business Marketplace Manna’s Around the World Shop. Now they are expanding their ideas with a workshop to provide income for low income residents and a space to create and learn. The pair recently expanded Marketplace Manna’s from 151 E. Michigan Ave. to include 149  E. Michigan Ave (right next door) and will be converting the back half of their current location for the new REED Workshop Center. REED is an acronym for Repurposing, Environmentally friendly, Economically beneficial, and Developing Skills.  Al Mellinger said the goal is to have a dedication and fundraiser for the workshop in the next month and open before Easter. The fundraiser will be to purchase supplies to create products for the shop. The organization currently works with residents at the Jackson Interfaith Center and the John George Home to create products and earn supplemental income.
