NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet Planned

The annual Jackson County Branch of the NAACP will hold its annual Freedom Fund Banquet, Sunday, October 13 at 5pm at the Country Club of Jackson.  Kenneth L. Harris, President and CEO of the Michigan Black Chamber of Commerce will be the keynote speaker.  Arlene Robinson and Alicia Williams welcome all to attend and reservations can be made by calling 517-784-3842.  Other guests:  Northwest Community Schools Superintendent Geoff Bontrager with Center for Family Health COO Sara Benedetto;  Builder Walk with Andy Woell, General Materials;  Jackson Coffee Co. Health Department Gears Up for Flu Season

R.N. Mary Ricciardello and the Jackson County Health Department are planning for the upcoming flu season with adequate supplies of vaccine.  She recommends anyone over the age of 6 months get a flu shot, which are available at the Health Department, 1715 Lansing Avenue.  Other guests:  Lee Hampton, Director of Multicultural Affairs, Jackson College;  Jenny Wren, Allegiance Health, 15th Annual Walk to Remember;  Todd Wanty and Jan Witte, Brooklyn-Irish Hills Chamber of Commerce with Fall Color Tour;  Jackson Underworld actors Janet Parker, Phil Rowlson, Glenn Sparks and Justin Steele;  Michigan Theatre's Steve Tucker and Stephen Tucker;  Pet of the Week with Kathy Brafford, Cascades Humane Society. Chucky Buckles’ Week 6 Football Picks

The Chuck Wagon, also known as Chucky Buckles’ season of picking football winners, is back on solid ground. Two weeks ago, after a terrible 7-5 week, questions abounded as to whether or not Chucky had what it took to maintain a solid 83% (or B-) average. Then last week he charged from the gate and finished 11-1, his best week this year! But Week 6 looms and the times, as they say, ‘they are a changin’. GRASS LAKE @ MANCHESTER: Chucky toyed with picking Manchester to spring the upset here, mostly because the Flying Dutchmen nickname is really cool. Then he learned that an old, old wooden ship has never been spotted in the Manchester area, so confusion set in. Also, Grass Lake has outscored everyone not named Michigan Center 161-14 this year. That sort of wrapped it up. PICK: GRASS LAKE  JONESVILLE @ HOMER: Homer has outscored the opposition 179-13 (36-3 average) in the FIRST HALF this year! The Trojans have spent most of the second halves playing the new Grand Theft Auto game and trying not to spill energy drinks on each other. Jonesville is unbeaten as well (5-0) but the Comets had had a couple of squeakers…

Senior Spotlight: Northwest’s Drew Galloway

Larry Jacobson, JTV Sports I tried – I really did… I tried to get Northwest High School senior Drew Galloway to talk about the end of the high school football season and what might lie ahead for the Mounties: such as the school’s first football playoff berth. But try as I might, he wouldn’t budge. “We just want to keep it very simple and focused,” Galloway said. “Our goal is to be 1-0 each week- climbing just that one mountain. We have a pretty tough schedule and Coach Slater wants us only to concentrate on the next week’s opponent and the whole team has bought into that.” Galloway, a senior wide receiver and defensive back for the Mounties and a three sport athlete in football, basketball and baseball, did provide a little more insight. “You know, all of our goals are still intact despite these losses,” he said. “It would be awesome to make the state playoffs and the whole school and community would be excited to see it.
