Spring Arbor Softball splits twinbill with Grace

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – After claiming the opening game 2-0, the Spring Arbor University softball team came within four outs of sweeping Grace College, but the Lancers rallied late to defeat the Cougars 3-2 and salvage a split during Tuesday’s doubleheader.   Spring Arbor moves to 27-19 overall – the most wins in a season since the 2010 campaign – and sits in fourth place in the Crossroads League standings with a mark of 10-6 in league play.   Game one was a pitcher’s duel as Kaitlyn Sinclair (pictured) and GC’s Elaina McClellan and Chandler Elliott did not surrender a single run through the first five innings. The Cougars threatened in the top of the fourth inning, loading the bases with no one out, but the Lancers (22-18, 13-9 CL) got a pop out before inducing an inning-ending double play to escape the jam.   Spring Arbor was finally able to breakthrough in the six, however, when Liz Campeau delivered a clutch, two-out single to bring home Megan Labut. The Cougars added an insurance run in the seventh when Sydney Taylor drove in Amanda Youngheim with a base hit to center field.   That was plenty of support for Sinclair…

Ninth inning rally not enough for Spring Arbor against #19 Davenport

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University baseball team scored two runs in the bottom half of the ninth inning, but was unable to complete the comeback as it fell to No. 19 Davenport University 10-8 on Tuesday.   Davenport (29-9) entered the game red hot having won 17 of its last 19 games, but it was Spring Arbor that struck first. The Cougars pounded out seven hits in the first two frames to race out to a 5-0 lead. Reigning Crossroads League Player of the Week Tyler Reed wasted no time extending his hitting streak to eight games with an RBI double in the first inning while Conner Lengerich highlighted a three-run second with a two-RBI single.   The Panthers began to battle back though using its high-powered offense to score three times in the third inning before exploding for six in the fifth to grab a 9-5 advantage.   Jeremiah Johnson homered in the bottom half of the fifth to cut into the deficit, but DU would an insurance run in the eighth to boost the margin back to four, 10-6.   In the bottom of the ninth, the Cougars put runners on the corners with two…

The arms to win

Lumen baseball team has pitching depth to make another run  (file photo above)   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson — They were the best team in Division 3, a collection of guys that went to East Lansing with a dream, and exited with a state championship trophy.   In 2015, there were none better than the Lumen Christi baseball team.   And when the 2016 season began a few weeks ago, coach Phil Clifford made it a point to stress last year is just that — last year.   “You have to separate the two years and the two teams,” Clifford said. “That was last year, the 2015 team. This is the 2016 team, one that has to create it’s own identity. We still have to figure out chemistry, the guys on the field. We’re replacing our outfield and pieces of our infield. Sure, we recognize the achievement, but this is a new team.”   True, but some of the key pieces from that group are back in the mix.   Nine guys that were part of the state title returned this spring, including four starters.   But the key, Clifford said, is pitching depth — and the…

Once the bats get going

Nearpass knows success of Jackson baseball will be determined when offense gets going   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson — Pitching often has the early season advantage in terms of baseball. When the spring season begins, sometimes with snow flurries still swirling, getting legit swings off live pitching is a luxury few teams have.   As David Nearpass looked back on the first four games of the 2016 season, the Jackson skipper sees plenty of potential with his group, “once the bats wake up,” he said with a laugh.   “We’ve played four games and allowed 10 total runs. We should be 4-0,” Nearpass said. “We’ve pitched well enough to win. The defense has been pretty strong for being early in the season. We just need to get the bats going.”   The Vikings were just 1-2-1 through those games, and as Nearpass said, a pitching staff that’s allowed 10 runs deserves a better record.   Asked what the main issue has been so far, Nearpass said pitch selection.   “We’re letting too many good pitches go by,” he added. “We’re taking that first strike, then getting behind in the count. If it’s there, smack it. We have…

Spring Arbor Track & Field sees strong performances at SHU Don Kleinow Invitational

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Don Kleinow Invitational Saturday at Siena Heights University.   The women’s team saw its second athlete book a trip to the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships as freshman Katrina Tovar hit the NAIA B standard in the pole vault. Tovar cleared a height of 11’ 5.75” (3.50m) to earn ninth place in the event. Sophomore Bethany Kuenzer, who has also qualified for the championship meet in the event, earned fifth place with a mark of 11’ 9.75” (3.60m), which matched her career-best.   Tovar also had a standout performance in the long jump as she claimed fifth place. She jumped 17’ 7” (5.36m), a distance that was just three inches shy of the program record.   Junior Grace Sallee posted a new school record in the hammer throw. Her toss of 124’ 7” (37.98m) smashed her previous PR and bested the program’s all-time mark by almost four feet.   Freshman Ryann Laier recorded the fifth-best mark in program history in the discus with a throw of 122’ 6” (37.34m) to earn ninth place out of 36 competitors in the event.  …

Column: Enjoy the streak

Hockey fans need to embrace Red Wings streak of 25-consecutive playoff appearances   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   It begins tonight, a tradition bordering on ridiculous, yet one any hockey fan needs to embrace.   For the 25th consecutive season, the Detroit Red Wings are a part of the NHL’s postseason tournament.   Try and put that into context, or find a similarly staggering streak of consistency.   Good luck.   Some will say the Red Wings backed in this year, playing slightly less worse than the Boston Bruins in the season’s final week, but to that I ask, so what?   If the NHL has proven anything since the most-recent lockout, it’s that any team that makes the Stanley Cup playoffs has a shot at ending up on top.   Sure, that’s a long shot for this group of Winged Wheelers, who spent the better part of the season searching for a consistency that never truly arrived.   The team’s leading goal scorer is a 19-year-old, and some of the key pieces still remaining to the last championship in 2008 are approaching the end of their careers.   According to just about every national expert, the Wings begin…

Reed’s grand slam powers Spring Arbor Baseball to split at IWU

MARION, Ind. – Junior Tyler Reed blasted a first inning grand slam and the Spring Arbor University baseball team cruised to an 11-1 victory in the opening game of a doubleheader against Indiana Wesleyan University on Tuesday. However, the Wildcats took the second game 8-3 to avoid the sweep.   The first two batters of the game reached base on Indiana Wesleyan (27-12, 10-4 CL) errors, and three batters later, Reed made it hurt crushing the first offering he saw over the left field fence to stake Spring Arbor to a 4-0 lead.   That was how the score stayed until the bottom of the fourth when IWU’s Caleb Eder led off the frame with a solo home run, but the Cougars responded immediately with five runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach. With the bases loaded and only one out, Reed singled to left to drive in Chris Triplett and Conner Lengerich. Nate Sitkiewicz and Jack Driscoll would also record RBI hits in the inning.   Reed finished the game going 2-for-3 with six RBI and three runs scored. Sitkiewicz also picked up two hits, including a triple, while driving in three. Lengerich crossed the…
