A season of pride

Onsted falls in regional final, finishes 2015-16 with a 23-1 record   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Onsted – The difference between perfection and a season concluded was one, single loss.   On Wednesday night in a Class B regional final, the Onsted boys basketball team learned that lesson the hard way.   Unbeaten all winter, the Wildcats surrendered a fourth-quarter lead to River Rouge, eventually falling 49-44 at the Dundee High final.   “I really thought we played well defensively. We played well for three quarters,” coach Brad Maska said. “In the fourth they were able to limit possessions. They stalled a bit, and we weren’t able to get inside as much as we needed to. We also had some good looks, and we didn’t make as many shots as we needed.”   Onsted led 40-38 entering the fourth, but then found just four points in the final eight minutes.   River Rouge took the lead with a little more than two minutes remaining.   Onsted trailed 47-44 with 15 seconds remaining but couldn’t get a 3-pointer to drop.   Austin Davis, who scored 46 and 42 points in each of the past two games, respectively, was held…

Regional title on the line

Onsted looks to keep perfect record going strong in Class B regional final   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Onsted – Perfect, so far.   If the Onsted boys basketball team wants to keep the season that way, it will do so tonight in a Class B regional final.   And if the Wildcats do, they will snap a regional-title drought dating back to 1983.   “And truthfully, that’s not on the guys’ mind at all,” coach Brad Maska said. “Our guys are more focused on what happened in last year’s regional final when we lost to Milan. Our goal was to get back to this point and avenge that. We have that chance now.”   Onsted, 23-0, takes on River Rouge (21-3) at 6 p.m. tonight at Dundee.   “They have a good point guard, a very aggressive kid who can get to the rim,” Maska said. “They also have some size. They force turnovers. It’s an interesting match up. It comes down to taking care of the ball. They are going to try and get us to turn the ball over. Spring Arbor student-athletes use spring break to give back

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Spring break usually means beaches and relaxation for most college students. For Spring Arbor University spring-sport student-athletes it means a jam-packed slate of games in the warm weather and sunshine. But for members of the women’s tennis and softball teams, this year was a chance to give back and serve the local communities they visited.   While in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, the women’s tennis team partnered with a community organization called The Deep Well Project. Deep Well, as it’s known on the island, is a non-profit organization that has been giving islanders a hand-up since 1973. Head coach Bobby Pratt and his team had the opportunity to aid a gentleman with work around his property.   "It was very nice helping out someone in the community who physically cannot do that on their own,” said student manager Cindy Yang. “It was a great team-bonding experience and it drew us closer together."   “Doing something like this as part of our spring break experience is just as important as any of the matches that we play,” added Pratt. “Christ came to be a servant and He implores us to follow His example no matter where…

Comets (22-2) set to tangle with Pewamo-Westphalia (22-2) in regional final   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Horton – Since last season came to a close on the floor of the Breslin Center, Chad Mortimer and the guys associated with that state semifinal loss have set their sights on a return trip in 2016.   The Hanover-Horton boys basketball coach said Wednesday night’s Class C regional opponent will be the best his team has seen all year.   So, the road to East Lansing continues in Springport and must go through Pewamo-Westphalia.   “They are very disciplined. They take care of the ball. They run different set plays every time down the floor,” Mortimer said of Pewamo-Westphalia (22-2). “They are a very good team, the best we’ve seen all year.”   The Comets, also 22-2, aren’t too shabby themselves, though.   That was evident Monday night in a regional semifinal when Mortimer admitted his guys went through some bad stretches, but still found a way to eliminate Dansville 77-65.   “It was close the whole way,” Mortimer said. “We’d get up eight or nine and they’d battle back.
