After years of struggling, Jackson reestablished football tradition in 2015 By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson – There came a time when something had to change, a moment where this trend of suffering and forgettable moments, had to be dismissed. Since reaching the playoffs in 2009, the Jackson High football program had been coasting downhill, like, Clark Griswold on a greased up sled speeding downhill. A year after making the playoffs the Vikings went 3-6. That was followed by 1-8, 0-9, 2-7 and 1-8. And then, at last, came 2015. “Truthfully, I expected a very good year,” coach Scott Farley said earlier this week while reflecting on the season. “We knew we had good guys coming back. We had some character guys, guys that put a lot of work into making this better.” And did they ever. Following last weekend’s loss to Livonia Franklin in the district final, the Vikings closed the fall with an 8-3 record. Again, that’s after going 7-38 in the five previous seasons. “As far as building the program back up, it was important to have a year like this,” Farley stressed. “The kids needed to see that if they did what we asked, we could…

Lumen set to battle Clinton High in Division 6 regional final By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson – For the third week in a row, the Lumen Christi football team will face a team in the postseason for the first time in program history. But this week may not be like any before it. “It’s probably one the best teams we’ve seen all year,” Titans coach Herb Brogan said. “They are very good. They’re the real deal.” This year, and plenty before it. Clinton is 11-0 this season, and the current group of seniors has a four-year record of 43-3. But as for this year, well, the group has been dynamite. The Redskins are averaging 37.8 points per game, keyed by senior running back Matthew Sexton. In 11 games this season, Sexton has rushed for 1,810 yards and 29 touchdowns, picking up 164.5 yards per game. “We have to tackle, that’s the No. 1 thing,” Brogan said simply. “Their running back is for real, and they have more than just (Sexton). The key is, they can’t get loose in the secondary. If they are getting to our secondary, we’re going…

Wolvin proud of his Vandercook Lake squad after eight wins and spot in postseason By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson – The loss, some five days old, still stung. Steve Wolvin wanted to be coaching football this week, not looking back on a season that was. But less than a week after falling to Lumen Christi 35-7 in a Division 6 playoff opener, the Vandercook Lake coach took a moment to reminisce about a season that was — a season of excellence. “We had a bunch of kids that came from so many different backgrounds and accomplished something here that hadn’t been done in a long, long time,” Wolvin said. “That’s what we’ll enjoy about this year.” From close calls to upside down records, the Jayhawks had knocked on the playoff door plenty of times since last making it in 1997, but the 2015 group kicked said door down. Vandercook started the season wit a 27-14 victory against Springport and never looked back, reeling off seven straight wins before falling to Manchester in Week 8. But in one of the wildest games anyone has ever seen, Vandercook capped the regular season with a 45-42 victory over Springport in which the…
Lumen and Manchester to meet for first time ever with district title on the line By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson – Both coaches are excited for the opportunity at hand. Both coaches know that if there respective team isn’t better than it was a week ago, the 2015 season will have just 48 minutes remaining. That’s the sentiment of Lumen Christi’s Herb Brogan and Manchester’s Wes Gall as the two legendary sideline generals prep their teams for Friday night’s Division 6 district final at Manchester. “There was a lot to talk about on offense, defense and special teams,” Gall said of the film session his group had following a wild 43-40 victory against Grass Lake in the playoff opener. The win boosted Manchester to 9-1 on the season. “What happened last week won’t be good enough this week.” As for Lumen, almost nothing went right the entire first half against Vandercook Lake. The offense ran three plays in the first quarter, and the defense had no answer for the Jayhawks’ ground game, which scored on its first drive, but gave way to a missed field goal on the next drive. The tide seemed to turn as the ball sailed…
