Concord looks for second win, district title, tonight in rematch with Homer

By Mike Moore Staff Writer Concord — As has been the case nearly all season, there’s a certain significance with tonight’s district final for the Concord football team. A year of program firsts can put another check in the record book should the Yellowjackets find a way to go to Homer and defeated one of their top rivals for a second time this fall. “If we can win this game, it will be the most successful two-year span in program history,” coach Max Clark said. “It’s an exciting time for us. There’s some history to be made.” And a district title to be won. Concord (8-2) went 7-3 a year ago, equaling the highest win total for the program in two years, set in 2001 (10-3) and 2002 (5-5). But this year’s team has plenty of experience with big games, and big wins. The Yellowjackets won the first conference title in program history, and last week, knocked off rival Springport 21-14 for the first playoff win since 2001. Concord Football Embracing Home Playoff Game, Seeking Revenge on Springport

By Mike Moore Staff Writer Concord — It wasn’t long ago this program was an afterthought, a Friday night chance for any opponent to take out some aggression and pick up an easy win. That was then, this now. A now with the Concord football program that includes back-to-back appearances in the state playoffs. A now that includes the first ever Big 8 Conference title. A now, that for the first time since 2001, features a home playoff game. Yes, playoffs at Concord. How far things have come. “I’ve always believed in this,” coach Max Clark said. “I coached when things were rough, but always felt that if we could get people in the community on board to what we were trying to do, and get the kids that are here to play football, we’d be all right. I think we’ve built this up the right way. We probably do things little different, but it shows you when you go about things with a positive approach, positive things can happen.” The drop off for the Yellowjackets was drastic. Concord football has shot for first conference title in program history

By Mike Moore Staff Writer Concord — The past few years have seen the Concord football team experience a number of things for the first time ever. Friday night offers another, and maybe biggest, shot at that streak. “If we win, the worst we can do is share the league title,” coach Max Clark said. “It’s huge. It’s a huge opportunity.” Concord, 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the Big Eight, is tied in first place right now with Springport and Homer. Concord lost to Springport and beat Homer. “This has been a goal here for every Concord coach since we joined the Big Eight,” Clark said. “It’s been my goal since I took over. This is a chance to put us in that mix of contenders in this conference.” Clark took over prior to the 2013 season. In the 11-previous seasons, the Yellowjackets had one winning season. In Clark’s first two years, the team limped to back-to-back 1-8 records. But steps were being taken. Then last year hit. Concord went 7-3 and finally got back into the playoffs. By Mike Moore Staff Writer Springport — On Friday night, the Springport and Concord football teams will meet on the gridiron, per usual. And it will be unlike anything else to happen before “I think everything about this game is awesome,” Concord coach Max Clark said late Thursday night. “It’s new to our community and players and team, to be in this situation and have the chances in front of us that we’ve do.” “This is what small-town football is all about,” Springport coach Matt Schwartzkopf said of his team’s home game with the Yellowjackets. “This is two towns who have communities that center around the football teams, especially when they are doing well. This is going to be a cool atmosphere that I think all the kids are going to love being a part of.” The meeting will be the 58th all-time between the schools, which are separated by a roughly 20-minute drive. But never before have the teams entered the game this late in the season with each having as strong a record as they do. Concord comes in 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the Big 8, while Springport is 4-1…
