Concord basketball pounds Springport, runs win streak to 11 games in a row

By Mike Moore Staff Writer Concord — As a heavy favorite, Matt Lehman and his Concord High boys basketball team entered Tuesday night’s tilt with Springport focused on a number of specific goals. Scoring 70 points. Keeping the Spartans under 36. Allowing less than nine points per quarter. Well, the Yellowjackets did just about everything they wanted to in a 68-26 victory that, in all honesty, could have been a lot worse. “We’re trying to get into some solid habits right now,” Lehman said afterwards. “You never want to embarrass anyone, but as a team, we have to keep the pressure on. You can’t let up at all.” The Jackets didn’t. Concord got off to a 6-0 start, led 16-6 by the end of the first quarter. and built a 30-13 The lead was 30-13 by halftime, and after Rondez Rogers hit three 3-pointers in the third quarter, Concord led 48-19 after three. “We did a lot of good things tonight,” Lehman said. Wins stacking up as Concord boys basketball team continues to roll

By Mike Moore Staff Writer Concord — Out of the gate, there was trouble in the water. At least that’s what the record would have suggested. Yet, as Concord boys basketball coach Matt Lehman guided his guys through the first five games of the season, and the 1-4 record, there was never really any sense of concern. “That early competition was real good for us,” Lehman said Wednesday night. “We played some very solid teams right off the bat. I think, even at 1-4, we knew we had played some good teams and had done some good things.” Lehman certainly challenged his guys, taking on Michigan Center, Vandercook Lake, Reading, Hanover-Horton and Dexter in the first five games. The lone win was 63-40 drubbing of Reading. “You can put together a schedule to go 20-0, and I don’t know what good that does for you,” Lehman said. “We played some tough teams, played in some tough games and got ready for the rest of the year.” So, with those early games serving as a true test, and the reinstatement of Montez Brewer prior to the Dec. 28 Dexter contest, the Yellowjackets took…

Lions Club Food Drive Spring Arbor Michigan

SAU Athletics to partner with Lions Club for Food Drive

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University athletic department is partnering with the Parma-Spring Arbor Lions Club to host a Food Drive to collect non-perishable food items at the Cougar men's basketball game on Saturday, Dec. 10. Students are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item, while fans that bring one will receive free admission to the game. The contributions will go towards the Lions Club Christmas baskets which will be redistributed to help feed local families during the holiday season. Donations will also be welcomed. The Cougars will be hosting Grace Bible College at 3 p.m. Lions Club International is the world's largest service club organization. With more than 1.4 million members in approximately 46,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas around the world, its members are dedicated to doing whatever is needed to help their local communities.

Record-setting 2016 season will be one to remember for Concord football team

By Mike Moore Staff Writer Concord — It was a year that began with big ambitions, and one that ended with heads held high. As the Concord football program looks back on the history books, the 2016 season will down as one of the best the Yellowjackets have ever known. And given where this team and program has come from, that’s saying plenty. “I grew up with this program, and as a player watched the success we had.” coach Max Clark said Wednesday, just five days removed from the season-ending loss to Cassopolis. “It was a matter of doing the right things and sticking with the right things. At the same time, knew it wasn’t going to be an overnight thing. Still, this probably all happened quicker than people wanted.” What ‘this’ was, was a 9-3 season that included a host of records and a trip to the Division 7 regional final. Keep in mind, when Clark took over prior to the 2013 season, Concord had won 15 games in nine years. Football was an afterthought at the school. But Clark wanted to tap into something he experienced as a player from 1998…

Concord football approaches another milestone with regional final vs Cassopolis

By Mike Moore Staff Writer Concord — Another weekend, another chance to further what has become somewhat of an unforeseen story. For those outside the Concord football program, that is. The 2016 squad has been rewriting the record book at every turn, and now, at 9-2 on the season, has won more games (16) in a two-year period than any other time in program history. Win No. 16 came last Friday as the Yellowjackets did more than enough to beat Homer 48-32, winning the program its first district title since 2001 and it’s first road playoff game ever. “It’s just awesome,” coach Max Clark said. “It’s great for this program and great for these kids.” Tony Brooks Jr. continues to power the Concord offense. In the win against Homer, he completed 15-of-28 passes for 328 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 141 yards on 23 carries. Now his, and Concord’s challenge, is a Cassopolis (10-1) team that allows just 15 points per game in a Division 7 regional. “It’s the same old thing I’ve been saying.
