EJ Wins First District Softball Title in more than a Quarter Century

Members of the East Jackson High School varsity softball team celebrate a district title at home Friday afternoon. Photo:  Jeff Steers, JTV Sports. By Jeff Steers JTV Sports It was rather evident it has been a while since the East Jackson High School varsity softball team has celebrated any kind of championship. Two players grabbed the cooler following an 11-1 win over Concord in the district final in hopes of giving Coach Steve Csage a Gatorade shower. They barely hit Csage despite the coach knowing what was about to happen. East Jackson won its first district title since 1993 with a pair of wins at home Friday afternoon in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 4 district tournament. The Trojans dispatched Tekonsha 15-0 in three innings in game one and beat a feisty Concord team 11-1 in the district final. East Jackson will play the winner of the Petersburg-Summerfield district – to be contested on Saturday. The regional tournament will be at Sand Creek on June 8 with East Jackson scheduled to play the second game at noon. The Trojans made quick work of Tekonsha in the district semifinal, winning 15-0 in three innings. Jordan Nicholson earned the shutout…

Concord High School track and field athlete Vincent Giuliano

Giuliano built for speed at Concord

Concord High School track and field athlete Vincent Giuliano won the 100-meter dash Wednesday at home against Homer and Jonesville   By Jeff Steers JTV Sports   Concord High School junior Vincent Giuliano said he was “pushed” into track and field in sixth grade. Somewhere along the line he fell in love with the sport and what it could do for his body. Built like a linebacker, Giuliano has run a sub 11-second 100 this season, excels in the 200, and has vastly improved in the 400-meter dash. Giuliano has helped the Yellow Jackets all but wrap up a Big Eight Conference title in track. Concord earned a pair of wins Wednesday to finish the conference season with an undefeated record. Concord defeated Jonesville 84-49, and Homer 107-26, finishing the conference season at 7-0. Coach Mike Jurasek said the Big Eight Conference meet counts only one-third toward the final result. He noted the Yellow Jackets could finish as low as fifth, but still claim first place. That is exactly what Giuliano was doing Wednesday – winning the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, the 400 and was a member of a winning relay team. He ran the 100 in 11.5 seconds, the…

Billie Weeks Concord Softball

Versatile Weeks has high expectations in sports

Billie Weeks of Concord High School watches as the softball takes off during a recent game against Hanover-Horton.    By Jeff Steers  JTV Sports   A Cascades Conference coach leaned over and told his assistant coach “that was a win” after Concord High School slugger Billie Weeks hit a sharp single to left field. Nobody scored, Weeks did not hit the ball over the fence, and his pitcher was not forced to walk her. Weeks is quietly hitting close to .650, has four home runs and has a slugging percentage of 1.389. She would have better stats through the first couple of weeks of the season but other teams have noticed her hitting prowess. Weeks was walked seven times in a doubleheader against Reading. But what may be more impressive is Weeks is also competing in track and field at a high level. While a number of athletes “specialize” in one sport, Weeks will finish 2018-2019 with four varsity letters and possibly 14 for her career at Concord. “Being from a small school, you have to go where you are needed,” Weeks said of participating in more than one sport at a time. “It is still fun and I don’t…
