Lumen baseball two wins away from a repeat performance in Division 3

By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Jackson — Back in familiar territory with familiar pressures to overcome and a familiar prize now just two wins away.   A year ago the Lumen Christi baseball team came to East Lansing with a dream and left with the Division 3 state championship trophy.   On Friday, the Titans can take one step closer to a little sweet déjà vu.   “Every game we have out there, we talk about enjoying it,” coach Phil Clifford said about is guys approach to the D-3 semifinal. “They are a trained team at this point. They understand everything. Now it’s about enjoying it and playing the game we can.”   It’s playing that game that’s earned Lumen a spot in this game, a 2:30 p.m. tilt with New Lothrop with a spot in the state final on the line.   Still, even as he fielded questions about being a defending state champ and exactly what that means, Clifford stressed that all focus for his group is on the here, the now and nothing else.   “We really don’t like to think too much ahead,” he said. “I think as coaches, you have to gameplan for what…

Napoleon baseball team loose, excited for state quarterfinals

By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Napoleon — They will hit the road as underdogs, the team expected to have its season come to a close.   They will arrive at Carleton Airport with very few anticipating another game in 2016.   And that’s all just fine with the Napoleon baseball team entering Tuesday afternoon’s Division 3 quarterfinal game.   “We’re not supposed to be here,” coach Jeff Mohr said with a laugh. “That’s what we’re selling. We’re controlling what we can control, and having fun with it. The nice thing for us is we’re flying under the radar a bit. This is a team that hasn’t been ranked. Nobody really knows about us, which is nice.”   Plenty of people know about the Pirates’ opponent, though.   Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett is an annual power that’s won three state titles since 2011, including one in 2014.   “We can’t worry about them at all,” Mohr stressed. “They are going to hit us. We have to react, handle some adversity and find ways to get some good swings. I mean, if we get a ground ball, execute and get an out.”   Freshman Collin Bradley will get the start…

Concord baseball looks to get over the quarterfinal hump

By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Concord — Twice before, John Ropp has guided his Concord baseball team to this point in the postseason.   Twice before the Yellowjackets saw the playoffs come to a close one win shy of a spot in the final four.   Could the third time be the charm?   “The goal is to get to the semifinals,” Ropp said of his team. “We’re going to have to hit a little better than we have in the past quarterfinals we’ve been in. At the same time, all teams at this level are very solid. We may not be able to run the way we always like, and that’s a strength of ours. But we expect a tight game. It’s going to be fun.”   Concord, now 25-8, takes on Centreville at 5 p.m. at Bailey Park in Battle Creek.   The winner moves on to a 9 a.m. Division 4 state semifinal in East Lansing.   “This team is capable of winning a state title, I’ve said that all year,” Ropp said of his guys. “We’re in the right spot with our mental approach. Our hitting has come around. We have a lot going for…

MIS Looks to August Following Successful Firekeepers Casino 400 Weekend

Joey Logano celebrates winning the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway to claim his second victory at the track. (Credit: Getty Images)   The FireKeepers Casino 400 weekend just ended, but preparations are already underway for August at NASCAR’s fastest racetrack.   It’s about 10 weeks until the Careers for Veterans 200 presented by the Cooper Standard Foundation and Brad Keselowski’s Checkered Flag Foundation on August 27 and the Pure Michigan 400 on August 28. And track officials just can’t wait.   “What an amazing weekend,” MIS President Roger Curtis said. “We saw great racing in all three series, we had near-perfect weather and we even got to make some cool memories with our guests late into the night at Keloorah. It is hard for me to pick one favorite memory. Now, we are excited to welcome everybody back in August for another weekend in the Irish Hills.”   Joey Logano held off rookie sensation Chase Elliott to win the FireKeepers Casino 400 on Sunday. Logano kept his car straight as other cars were sideways coming out of turns throughout the day, a product of NASCAR’s new aero package, to claim his second victory at Michigan International Speedway.  …

Spring Arbor University holds groundbreaking ceremony for new tennis complex

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University community celebrated a significant milestone Thursday afternoon as SAU coaches, donors, staff and university officials gathered for the groundbreaking ceremony for the new state-of-the-art Ronald L. and Marvel C. Jones Tennis Complex.   The new facility will feature four pods of two courts for a total of eight courts constructed of post-tensioned concrete. The post-tensioned concrete courts will provide a sturdy and durable playing surface that is able to withstand abuse and is less susceptible to the climate than asphalt. Because of this, the facility can be first-class for decades to come.   “The quality of play is going to be excellent and it's going to be excellent for a long time,” said head women’s tennis coach Bobby Pratt. “This facility is something that's going to benefit generations of people that come through this area.”   Two of the courts will also have lights for night time use, while the four north courts will be three-feet below grade to provide a superior spectator experience.   Two brick and steel arched entry points will help define the facility, and there will be two large tensile shade structures that will provide shelter from the…
