Lumen Christi Golf Takes Aim at State Title
(photo courtesy Lumen Christi) By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson — The golf tradition and success here is as strong as any. So as the Lumen Christi squad preps for this weekend’s Division 3 state final, well, there’s some sense that going three consecutive years without a state title is too long. “So, our plan is to go out and win it all,” coach Dave Swartout said with a laugh Thursday afternoon. “That’s some awesome coaching, isn’t? But really, it’s that simple for these guys. If they are able to find their consistency and play to their capabilities, they have a chance to be a state champ.” Lumen is set to take part in Friday and Saturday’s team finals. Both days begin at 9 a.m. at Forest Akers East in East Lansing. The team is fresh off a regional title — its 11th in a row — but is seeking its first state championship since 2012. “I think that’s on their mind,” Swartout said. “Especially the seniors. They’ve been looking forward to this all year. They’re excited to get out there and compete.” The five golfers set to compete are Will Double, Luke Girodat, Logan Anuskiewicz, Grant Konkle and Tanner…
Superb pitching challenge awaits Grass Lake softball team in regional round
By Mike Moore Staff Writer Grass Lake — When the 2016 regular season came to a close in the MHSAA for softball, Meghan Beaubien was the ace of a Monroe St. Mary’s Catholic Central squad many pegged to repeat as state champs in Division 3. Then, shortly before the playoffs started, Beaubien was named Gatorade Softball Player of the Year for the second time in as many springs. Other than that, the Grass Lake squad has very little to worry about heading into Saturday’s 11:30 a.m. regional semifinal at Adrian Madison. “They are going to have one of the top pitchers in Michigan,” Grass Lake coach Roger Cook said simply. “We saw her last year. A lot of coaches have helped me get ready for her this year. We’ve been practicing at a high speed, and we have to.” Beaubien ended the regular season with an 18-1 record, 286 strikeouts and a 0.36 earned-run average. “She has a very good rise ball, an excellent change up and can hit the low-to-mid 60’s,” Cook added. The key, he added, will be his girls shortening up their swings while in the box. “It’s important…

Lumen track athletes set to tackle challenges of state finals
By Mike Moore Staff Writer Jackson — From the onset of the 2016 track and field season, Mike Woolsey has said the goal for his Lumen Christi track teams wasn’t to compete for a Division 3 state title. And that’s coming from a coach who guided the 2015 guys squad to the top spot in D-4. Instead, he spoke about getting this year’s group to peak at the right time, to put some of his athletes in position to compete for spots at the final, and if they make it, to then make the most of it. Well, speaking Friday morning, less than a day before the D-3 finals at Comstock Park, Woolsey’s approach hadn’t changed at all. “The goal and the mission is for our athletes to go there and set some personal bests,” Woolsey said. “This is the event everyone shoots for and wants to be part of.” The Titans will be well represented. Jacob Wildenhaus is the lone boy representative, and he’s set to compete in the 110-meter hurdles. “His goal is to go there and win,” Woolsey said simply. “He’s worked very hard for this, so it would be…
Northwest and Western to renew baseball rivalry in district semifinal
By Mike Moore Staff Writer The natural and obvious rivalries remain on the gridiron and hardwood. But don’t forget the springtime when school is winding down, summer beckons, and the baseball state playoffs officially heat up. Now, an extra little flavor for good measure. Taking part in the Eaton Rapids Division 2 district, the Western and Northwest baseball teams are set to square off in a semifinal at 10 a.m. Bragging rights on the line, sure. But a ticket to the district final, and shot at a regional appearance serves as the cherry on top. “Anytime you play Northwest, there is that added flavor,” Western coach Scott Oliver said with a laugh. “It makes it fun to be a part.” Northwest coach Cory Parrott is a 1999 grad of Western. “That adds something to it,” he said. “But it’s not about me. It’s about this rivalry. There’s a respect you have to have. We expect a good, competitive game.” That’s the way the first two meetings this year went. In both games of a May 17 doubleheader, Northwest led entering the seventh inning. In both games, Western found…
Spring Arbor University announces formal groundbreaking ceremony for new tennis facility
SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Spring Arbor University announced today (June 2) that the groundbreaking ceremony for its new tennis facility will take place at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 9, at the Cougar Tennis Courts. Demolition of the current tennis facility has already begun, and major upgrades are scheduled for the new Ronald L. and Marvel C. Jones Tennis Complex, which includes the complete rebuilding of the existing courts with post-tensioned concrete. Two new courts are also being added, bringing the total number of courts to eight. In addition to the new world-class courts and playing surface, the plans also include a clubhouse building with locker rooms for use by the teams. The upgrades were made possible thanks to a generous gift from Ron and Marvel Jones, who wanted to support the tennis program. “We are extremely thankful for the generosity of Ron and Marvel Jones and their tremendous investment in the lives of Spring Arbor University students,” said Brent Ellis, SAU President. “This gift enables our tennis programs to continue to recruit excellent student-athletes as well as provide an outstanding tennis venue for our teams and our community.” While the Jones’ lead gift helped make…
