Lumen Christi’s Angela Hubert signs with Davenport University

Larry Jacobson, JTV Sports After Lumen Christi High School senior Angela Hubert signed her letter-of-intent to play basketball at Davenport University (near Grand Rapids) on Monday morning, there was one final item to take care of: Her senior year of high school. “I feel like I can really enjoy my senior year now,” Hubert said after the short ceremony with her parents, family and school administrators from both Davenport and Lumen Christi. “It’s a big relief to make the commitment and to be able to say it’s done. I’m really excited about this year and beyond.” Ironically, what Angela enjoyed about Lumen Christi is what attracted her to Davenport. “There’s a real feeling of family and community here at Lumen Christi – from the students to the faculty,” she said. “I’m going to miss that about Lumen Christi, but I got that same feeling about Davenport. It’s a great fit for me. I really like the whole coaching staff and the other players and I just felt at home there.” Hubert, who averaged just over 12 points a game and shot nearly 80% from the free throw line last year for the Titans, spent time at an open-gym session…

Lumen Christi wins Promise Bowl 43-14 over Jackson

Larry Jacobson JTV Sports Some important questions were answered Friday night at Withington Community Stadium at the 2013 Promise Bowl between Jackson High and Lumen Christi. #1) - Lumen Christi is much more than just junior running back Khari Willis. #2)- The Jackson Vikings are a team on the rise if they play each game with the same grit and determination they displayed through four quarters in this one. In the end, Lumen Christi captured its second straight Promise Bowl Championship with a 43-14 win in front of a packed house, but this one wasn’t the route many expected. And it was closer than the final score indicated. The Titans struck first on a pair of touchdown runs from the junior, Willis, covering 9 and 37 yards to open a 14-0 lead. But unlike past teams, perhaps, Coach Scott Farley’s first Vikings squad dug in and punched back. Jackson quarterback Javon Greca, who showed remarkable poise all night running the Viking offense, scrambled out of trouble and hit Alex Carter on a short touchdown pass. Greca then connected with Ray Robinson for the 2-point conversion, and suddenly the would-be route was a 14-8 ballgame. The Vikings also had a long…

Chucky Buckles’ Week 2 Football Picks

Jackson High @ Lumen Christi (2013 Promise Bowl): Titans still angry over having to drive two-plus hours to Buchanan last week only to play two quarters before lightning scuttled the second half. The Vikings got to play three quarters in their loss to West Bloomfield. The extra game experience won’t help. PICK: LUMEN CHRISTI Hanover-Horton @ East Jackson: Comets team bus gets stuck in Wendy’s parking lot on East Michigan Ave waiting for spicy chicken sandwiches. They arrive at EJ just before kickoff. PICK: HANOVER-HORTON Lansing Waverly @ Northwest: Mounties opened the season with a big road win last week at Hillsdale, then celebrated on the way back by visiting antique shops along US-12. Coach Slater promises a trip to Stagecoach Stop if they make it two in a row. PICK: NORTHWEST Charlotte @ Western: The Panthers were so excited to open the season with a win over Lake Odessa that they spread it out over two days last weekend to savor the taste. Charlotte team bus driver, confused over all the construction on the Western campus, parks bus at MACI and makes team walk. PICK: CHARLOTTE Manchester @ Napoleon: The Pirates played tough in opening loss to Columbia Central…

Jake’s Take – Springport Football

By Larry Jacobson JTV Sports • Seven winning seasons in the last nine years. • Six playoff berths in the last seven. • A 23-6 regular season record over the last four. • A 42-23 mark over the last eight. If you had to pick the Jackson area football team those numbers described, which would it be? The Grass Lake Warriors…? The Lumen Christi Titans…? How about Michigan Center? Maybe even the Leslie Blackhawks? While those four programs have certainly enjoyed both regular season and playoff success over the years, the above statistics belong to a football program that keeps churning out competitive, tough-minded and gritty squads year after year: The Springport Spartans. Since 2000, the Spartans have had only 3 seasons when they won fewer than four games, yet they remain often forgotten when it comes to playoff picks or power polls. Most of that lack of recognition probably stems from the fact Springport heads west come playoff time and therefore out of the area. And they’ve yet to win a postseason matchup – going 0-7 in the playoffs. But it’s not the Spartans fault their playoff path generally leads through some of the state’s most vaunted small-school programs…
