Napoleon and Columbia Set to Kick Off 2016 with 49th All-Time Meeting

By Mike Moore Staff Writer Scott Ashe called it one of his program’s best rivalries. He also hinted how much of a must win it can almost feel like. The Napoleon and Columbia Central football teams will kick off the season Friday night, doing so in Week 1 for the fifth year in a row. For Ashe and his Pirates, figuring out Columbia and starting the season on the right foot is goal No. 1. “They’ve had our number for a few years now,” Ashe said. Columbia is 31-17 all time against Napoleon and has won seven of the past eight meetings. “It has to happen up front. They’ve been better up front than we have the past few years. That has to change.” Easier said than done, as Ashe pointed out. “Columbia is going to be well coached, and they have a good group of athletes,” he said. “That’s a team that comes ready to compete.” The Golden Eagles were dominant a year ago in the opener, rolling to a 35-0 victory that began what was a 1-3 start to 2015 for Napoleon. The chance to kick off the season on a high note is something Ashe put mounds…

Football Preview: Columbia Central

Columbia Central Last season’s record: 8-2 Returning starters: 5 on offense, 6 on defense First Game: Aug. 26 at Napoleon 7 p.m.   Offensive keys: Offense was the name of the game for Columbia a year ago, as the team scored more than 31 points en route to its 8-2 record.   While coach Josh Kubiak said replacing center Jacob Taylor has been one of the key focuses in camp, there are plenty of other weapons back in the mix.   “We return a lot of good skilled players,” Kubiak said simply.   Running back Micah Raby is back after rushing for 1,579 yards and 19 touchdowns on 175 carries in 2015.   “He’s going to be the focal point of our offense,” Kubiak said. “Most of what we do will be based around him.”   Sophomore Gehrig Elliot will be a multi-purpose back, even seeing time at quarterback.   “We should be able to score points this year, that’s for sure,” Kubiak said. “One of the strengths we have is speed. We’re going to be quicker and faster. We just have to get the ball to the guys in space.”   Defensive keys: While the offense hummed right along…

Girls Basketball: JTV Sports Coach of the Year

McDevitt turned 1-2 team into program record-setter with Columbia Central   By Mike Moore Staff Writer   Brooklyn – Two losses in the first three games, and one by an eye-opening 51 points.   That certainly wasn’t the start Columbia Central girls basketball coach David McDevitt had drawn up when the winter began.   But with patience and coaching came improvement and success.   Record-setting success, to be exact.   And with that, McDevitt is the 2016 JTV Sports Girls Basketball Coach of the Year.   “It was a great year, really,” McDevitt said. “To me, one of the main things that stands out is the perseverance and character of the girls. We didn’t get off to a great start. We struggled to win our first game and then lost badly the next two.”   But they hung in.   McDevitt credits his girls and their desire to get better, but he had plenty to do with it.   As for the start, the Golden Eagles began the winter with a 47-45 victory against a Lumen Christi team that would end up winning six games all year.   The second game was a 56-26 loss to Northwest, followed by a…
