Playoff Bracket Set for Jackson-Area Football Teams; Let the Fun Begin

And from that first whistle of that first practice of that first football day, teams across the state take aim at one thing — a shot to make the postseason. Nine weeks of games later, the haves and have nots have been officially determined. On Sunday night, the MHSAA released its 256-team field for the 2016 playoffs, and here’s a quick look at all the Jackson-area teams. Dates and times for each game will likely be set Monday. In Division 5, Region 4, Columbia Central (7-2) plays host to Southfield Bradford Academy. The winner faces Stockbridge (5-4) or Ida (8-1) in a district final. In Division 6, Region 4, Lumen Christi (7-2) will play host to Watervliet (7-2). If there’s one thing the Panthers do well, it’s score. The team averaged 55.1 points per game this year, and scored 58 or more on five different occasions. Lumen and Watervliet have never faced one another. The winner faces Constantine (6-3) or Schoolcraft (9-0) in a district final. In the same region, Michigan Center (6-3) travels to play at Napoleon…

Photos by Ryan Kerwin, JTV Sports By Mike Moore Staff Writer Brooklyn — He was mentally preparing for overtime, the coaching wheels spinning as to what choices would have to be made in the extra session, assuming the coming extra point would be good. But Josh Kubiak never got the chance to work the overtime, because the extra point never got the chance to be kicked. “The guys came running off the field saying, ‘let’s go it,’” the Columbia Central football coach said Friday night. “So, I looked at my coaches and said we were going to go for it.” Go for it they did. Win they did. “It wasn’t the most logical decision, but that’s what they wanted to do,” Kubiak said with a smile following his team’s dramatic 29-28 victory over Hillsdale in the regular-season finale. The Golden Eagles scored with 20 seconds remaining in regulation to pull within one point on a 12-yard scoring strike from Khol Partridge to Connor Davenport. Columbia’s journey to second playoff appearance in as many years is ripe for the taking

By Mike Moore Staff Writer Brooklyn — Football may be the ultimate sport in terms of a necessity of taking things one game and one week at a time. With six or seven days between games, so much can, and often does, change the dynamic of a team and a season. And with all that said, Josh Kubiak talked Thursday about the final four weeks of the regular season, and took a very cautious look at the challenges, and rewards, possibly awaiting his Columbia Central football team. “It’s really a matter of staying within ourselves for four weeks,” Kubiak said. “We believe that if we come out, play our game, we have a chance to win out and put together two great seasons back to back.” The Golden Eagles went 8-2 last year and are 3-2 entering Friday’s Homecoming tilt against Onsted. That’s the first objective. “That’s a big team, a team much bigger than us,” Kubiak said of Onsted, which is 1-4 on the year. “What we can’t do is take them lightly. Golden Eagles embracing great challenge for tonight’s home opener

By Mike Moore Staff Writer Brooklyn — After consecutive wins to the start the season, the Columbia central football team came back to Earth a bit in a Week 3 loss to Hudson. Even so, when asked about the 26-14 setback, coach Josh Kubiak did his best to keep things in perspective. “The Hudson game really came down to too many mental mistakes,” he said. “But we knew we’d have a tough schedule to start the year. Our focus is breaking the season down into thirds, and in each third, we want to win at least two games. We accomplished our first goal. Now, we want to do the same over the next three.” The Golden Eagles get that chance starting tonight, in their first home game of 2016, against Ida. The Bluestreaks come in at 3-0, having outscored their opponents by nearly 40 points per game so far. This is also a team that went 12-1 a year ago, ending the fall in a 28-26 Division 5 semifinal loss to River Rouge. “We have to stop the run, that’s the key thing,” Kubiak said about the Ida offense, which is scoring 52 points…
